Henreys rifle deer hunt

I went up on the Henreys rifle deer hunt with a buddy. We saw tons of 22"-30" 4x4's but no true wall hangers. I also noticed just about every other person I saw up there was road hunting---saw the same trucks, atv's etc driving round & round all day. Was wondering if anyone else was up there & saw anything nice?

I did talk to the DNR up there & he said that someone shot a 215"ish buck...he said someone wounded it & it ran down the hill & someone else killed it & there was a big fight over it.

I bet their was, LOL

Since when was a 30" buck not a wall hanger?

My nieghbor killed a toad on Sat. 8x11, 35+ wide. He just wanted a 30 inch buck, so he was pretty happy. I'll bet if you had left the road you would have seen fewer road hunters. But you probably knew that.

The guy i was with wanted something specific over 30"... the ones we was seeing was 30" however still young deer with not much mass. Not typically a "trophy" considering the location.

YELUM--in response to your ignorant comment-- I was up on the mountain & could see the roads below.

bama, didn't mean to upset you, but my comment wasn't ignorant. You said you watched the same trucks, atv's, etc, all day driving the roads, so whether you were in a truck, atv, or had hiked up the mountain to glass, you were still close enough to the roads to identify the same road hunters. If you were looking for a specific buck, but all you saw were smaller bucks, then theres a good chance that buck left the high traffic areas for seclusion.

I wish you and your buddy luck, cause thats a tag I can only dream about.

Yelum

YELUM--I wasn't upset----but im a far cry from a "road hunter" & thats what it seemed to me you was implying?
We was a full days hike away from any road, just couldn't locate a buck that he wanted to shoot? I don't know if you are farmiliar with the Henrys?, but from the tops of Mt. Ellen, Hillers, Pennell & the other connecting peaks you can see all the roads down low & wouldn't effect the deer at all. We passed on 3 bucks that I would have shot, but he didn't want them....looks like he is gonna eat tag soup...I think he is done :-(

LOL. I didn't mean for my post acuse you of being a road hunter, its just the way you discribed it, made it sound that way. I know you can glass a lot of country from several spots. There are also several places that you can't see unless you hike into them.

I can't imagine having that tag and giving up with 5 days left, unless family/work issues prevent it. Even if I didn't harvest a buck, I'd enjoy every minute I had a valid tag down there looking. Just for the chance of a bruiser walking into my bino/spotter view. Talk him into giving it another go.

I'd almost bet you lunch the guy who shot that big 35"er located it from the road. You should try road hunting sometime. It can be very effective on those limited entry areas where the big bucks are dumb. Why spend 2 full days hiking into an area and then getting skunked when you can drive from one end of the unit to the other and glass TONS more area in that same amount of time?

Shooting a big buck on the Henry's is like shooting a 2pt on a general season unit. Not that hard to do...

I hope your buddy gets his buck before the end of the week. It sounds like he knows what he wants. Like Yelum said, it sure would be nice to have that tag.

Its a good thing you included the word 'almost', otherwise you'd be taking me to lunch. lol

I called him & think I've got him talked into going back :)
--I think he is butt-hurt & feeling sorry for himself?

--about the road hunting....you are correct about seeing big bucks from the road. While down there scouting we did glass a lot from the road & did see some nice bucks! I just didn't wanna ride around the road & get out on every vantage point & look during the hunt like everyone else?

IDK? Just not in me?

So he was off on the shoulder with his scope and a lawn chair? That still counts as "the road"! :)

Getting down there will cure that. When I get butthurt and feeling ssorry for myself, a trip to the island looking at bucks always makes me feel better.

After reading this post, I am left speachless???? I spent some time down there last year, and every where I went, saw big deer. 180" four point drinking water out of a rut in the road. I would make sure I got back down there, and pay particular attention to the lower elevations as well.

What the hell with all the macho stuff? Road hunting sounds good to me today! It's COLD out there right now! haha

The guy who has the tag should go back down.... or never left in the first place. Here's proof that tags will continue to go to those who don't really want them.

You'll have to be the backbone for your buddy and get him to go so he doesn't waste the tag!

Good luck to you guys and keep us posted.

Zeke

PS: I love and miss that place. Those were the good old days!

This year your not gonna see those giant 220-240 bucks come off there like in years past... Yes there are some GIANT bucks there but this year there was not very good horn growth.... I have saw alot of deer this year from the 180's to 195 and just a few bucks that are over 200. Its a hard hunt there this year to get the big bucks but they are there!

Zeke, you don't happen to know a guy named E Hammond? Did you hunt down on the Henry's with him and a couple of punk kids about 23 years ago? Long before it was a premium unit? If so I would be the punk kid that wasn't his son! :)

LAST EDITED ON Oct-23-12 AT 02:59PM (MST)[p]I've talked to him several times today trying to motivate him. Sent him pics & all---I don't think he is gonna even go back!!!
--it's sad!! I wish I had that tag!!! We saw a bunch of deer in the 180" ballpark & a few above that for sure!!
Iv tried & tried??!! I don't know what else to tell him? Yep! He wasted a once in a lifetime tag :-(

I was there for sure but his name isn't ringing any bells.
My bet is we've bumped into you guys on more than one occasion.

Thanks for the shout-out,
Zeke

This is what is wrong with UT LE hunts, the dude hunts 2 freakin days!!! Does not see a 220" buck, takes his marbles and goes home!! UT expectations are almost comical.

Cut tags and move the hunt to Nov... problem solved.

He has a Henrys rifle tag and doesnt want to go back down!? Man i would give my left nut for that tag!

I did!!! I have pretty much hurt his feelings...on the bright side, that saves a trophy deer for someone who really wants it!!

I wonder how you 2 where doing down there.

I knew with this weather coming in that I had hoped he harvested before it hit.

Glad to hear ya got him talked into going back down!!!

Ya need anything---stop by okay.

Robb

Robb,
Hey there man. I stopped by yesterday & I must have beat you home? Maybe today. I talked to Hyrum yesterday, he stopped by. I was gonna tell you about the hunt. Drive up today during the day if your out & about.

The DNR cop I talked too said the buffalo hang out down around muddy creek, the west side of Pinnell, & the North side of Pinnell over by the Horn...., I was in that area & never saw them?

I'll bet with all the pressure down there that some of the buffalo are pushed down onto Cave Flat. We've seen them there more times than not over the years.
Zeke

Thanks for the visit this afternoon Larry.

Great to see you and Ryan.

Zoi and Zane sure liked your ricecrispy treats!!!

That is one big dandy buck---felt great in my hands.

Robb

Can't believe anyone in their right state of mind that had that tag wouldn't live down their till there dreams were fulfilled. Sad sad. Look at the bright side I guess and hopefully that deer he didn't get will get a little bigger for next year. So sad.

Just got a phone call from my buddy. He got him a very nice 5x4 this morning---not sure just how big yet....he said it was outside his ears. I'll see it later today when he gets home

Good to hear he pulled his head out of his a$$ and went and got him a buck, post pictures when you can
