Southern UT Pinevalley unit

Dont know how everyone else is doing on PV this year but I've only seen 1 3 pt taken during the rifle and heard of a handful of others taken during the hunt. Not many shots at all either during the rifle. Think what deer herd there in the unit are widely dispersed right now.

My honest opinion of the unit is that it absolutely sucks. If you enjoy seeing lots of does and fawns with your kids then it's ok. Just sucks for hunting. This unit is one the top tag giving unit and I think over the years has just simple been decimated.

Worst ever that I have seen. I hunted several places that we used to hunt and saw tons of deer but they have all been snatched up by the aliens. Went to several other places and nothing. Only saw 10 does about the 4th day of the hunt and kept seeing the 2 same deer when I visited a spot. Ended up taking a big 2x2 med sized horns but weighed about 200lbs. Dropped off at butcher and had 96lbs on the hook without spine, neck, and head.

Talked to several out of state hunters and locals and hear the same thing. Terrible year.

Hope the last weekend got better .

I left Thursday night.

You guys out there also have some kitty kats. I saw a cougar on Wednesday chasing a doe and they were both fast. Thursday morning saw fresh lion tracks and found a several week old killed deer. Found several old bones laying around in different places.

I agree with you guys, it's tough to find big bucks in this unit these days but if you hike hard/far enough you can find em. It has been hunted really hard for the last 10-15 years and it shows. That being said, I had a great time hunting with family and friends. Saw a lot of smaller bucks and ended up tagging out on a small 4 point. I'll try to put a photo up soon (I'm new to the forum so be patient :))

83, where did you see the lion? I know guys with dogs in that area that would love to go check it out.

I hiked in and around about 5+/- mmiles everyday. I hunted by myself everyday and never saw anyone around except 3 on horses one day. Looked over hills and hills. Tried approaching hills from different directions and at different spots. Looked hard and long everywhere. Very tough unit to hunt. I do believe it gets hit hard by stick and string and smokepoles.

Disappointed as well. The rifle hunt is a different story for this unit.

I don't think there is any other quality
so essential to success of any kind as the
quality of perseverance. It overcomes
almost everything, even nature.

Glad to hear I wasnt the only one, and definitely not from lack of trying, that had a tough hunt on the unit. Dont get me wrong I love success stories and think that is basically why I come on this site, but the Pine Valley unit sucks and even though I live in it, I dont think I will try for a tag here again.

The funny thing about all of it, or maybe not so funny is how much negative attention the Cache unit gets, and even had leftover tags that ulitmately rolled over to rifle, but somehow managed to have a stellar year. Yes, the snow helped but plenty of big bucks were killed before the snow hit last week.

This brings up the bigger question, why does Southern Utah get so much attention and noteriety for general units when in all reality it's like hunted a nuked bomb wasteland with very little to no deer? Man I would much rather hunt some real mountains with quakie and aspen paches than junpiper bushes etc.

Next year I'm going Northern Utah and hopefully east to Colorado.

I dont know what it is. 6 years ago we went up there and got 6 for 6. 2 4x4s and 1 hell of a 4x4. The rest were 3x3 or 2x2's. There were deer all over. It was just as hot and they were migrating in my opinion.

What happened 6 years ago til now? I dont know but talked to some forest service that mentioned Pine Valley got some weird storms recently and pushed the deer out. True or not I dont know. I used to see does all the time but not this time.

I did see a lot more kitty kat tracks, scat, and 2 kills possible 3 that could have been mtn lion kills.

Hope the unit gets better. I did have a great time hunting solo and I absolutely enjoy spending time up in them hills.
