My Vernon Buck

I shot this buck at the top of Little Valley on the 4th day of the hunt. I had passed on him 2 days prior to me killing him on Tuesday evening. He was with 4 does and was rutting pretty good. When I first saw him, he was skylined, standing on a rocky outcropping with his nose in the air sniffing. It was a pretty cool sight. He was about 385 yards. I knew I could get closer to I backed off out of sight and popped up a bit up the hill from him. I got prone, bipod out, scope cranked up to 10X just watching him feed towards me. I debated for half an hour whether or not to shoot this buck. At one point, I had sat up deciding to pass on him again. I found myself back on the ground in the same position ready to pull the trigger, he was 260 yards at this point....just waiting for him to turn broadside. He finally did and put one right behind the shoulder. He ran towards me about 60 yards, stopped, did a little dance and tumbled down the hill landing in a thicket of buckbrush. I originally thought he was a 3x3 so I was a bit surprised when I got down there to him. I snapped some pics and got to work. Field dressed him and pulled him down the hill to the bottom of the canyon. drug him another 300 yards to the nearest ATV trail to pick him up. I hiked up to my quad where I ran into a couple of guys who offered to help me get him out (Mike, a red head who had won his tag at the Expo, and another guy named Kolby). I want to thank them for their help as they had two little kids with them and they could have not offered to help. I was by myself on this hunt so I was very appreciative for their help. We got the buck back to my camp where I skinned him out on a tarp. I worked on him until about 10:30 that night. Got him in my truck and went to bed. It snowed that night which really helped keep him cool. I ran him into Garys meats the next morning where they put me first in line for processing. My meat was ready Thursday morning. I headed home.
On the second day, I hunted the cedars on the north end of Little Valley and passed on a 24-25" 3x2. That was probably the highlight of my trip as I NEVER pass on deer. I had lots of time to access that deer and really enjoyed just watching him leave after passing on him. In hindsight, I should have shot that buck as he was the biggest buck I saw on the hunt. I found out the next night that a guy had gut shot the buck, bumped him out of his bed and never found him. That made my heart sink as I came back to try to find that buck and kill him.
This hunt was not what I had expected. it seemed everyone I talked to just werent seeing the bigger bucks. I saw a handful of small bucks being taken simply because the big ones werent being found. I need to thank a lot of guys for the advice and help they gave me prior to the hunt. Thanks to Seth King, Darrell Holden, Taylor Edwards, Mike Dutson, Danny Karren, Travis Ryan, travismadden.......and I'm sure I'm missing a few others. I thank you all for taking the time to make my hunt successful.
Here are some pics of my hunt....

It's the memories that count! Can't be ashamed of that buck and ive seen smaller bucks killed on the Vernon this year. Congrats!

Nice job Wiz. Until I saw you mug in the last pic I thought you just poached this pic off elkassasin's thread. FYI when pics don't load just rename them something simple like dinkbuck1, dinkbuck2, ect. Sometimes the forum doesn't like dashes and what not.

JFP is Right Wisz!:D

Glad you got your Buck Wisz!

You know I've had alot of Fun RAZZIN Your Silly Ass this year!:D

If You're Happy with that Buck that's all that matters,I know you were Hopeing & Holding for Bigger!

I've wished for alot of years Utah wouldn't run the General and the LE Deer Hunts at the Exact same time, makes it hard to Help somebody like Wisz when I like to Hunt PISSCUTTERS in a General Unit myself!

Congrats Wisz!Your Buck is way Bigger than mine, mine is kinda invisible!:D

Did you hear from D.H.?

Remember one more thing Wisz!

There are Big Bucks taken in TARDville every year,We mostly only see the Giants Posted,it'd be interesting on a percentage basis how many Hunters took a Buck any better than yours,it's a LOW number Wisz, there are Exceptions to the Rule but for the most part people Log on to MM & see mostly Big Bucks Posted & think Utah is Loaded with Huge Bucks,WRONG!

Nice Job Wisz & I won't be waiting for any PAY-BACKS any time soon!:D

Congrats Steve! That is a good buck. Good job on getting it done all by yourself. That makes it tough on a guy sometimes, but it looks like you enjoyed it, and that is what counts the most.

HOOK 'EM!

GOOD JOB WISZ, GOOD BUCK TO BOOT !!!! THE IMPORTANT THING IS YOU HAD A GOOD TRIP & A TON OF FUN...................YD.

Hey man, nice job..!! You got a very nice trophy, and a cool dead head to boot... Way to get it done on your own too. Thanks for sharing your hunt with us all...

Congrtas Wisz!!!!!! My boy's and I passed you friday afternoon before the hunt started... I wish I knew that was you we would have stopped and chatted, we were in my white Dodge Cummins with a fourwheeler rack on.... Looks like ya had fun....

Congrats on a nice buck. Nothing wrong with him.

It's easy to forget just how few and inbetween large trophy animals are when we get on a site like this. When my dad had a LE tag I certainly had high expectations with how the hunt would be. It ended up being far different and we ate tag soup. Would I have enjoyed seeing my dad harvest a nice animal, sure; but those memories of hunting 10 straight days with my dad on the mountain outweigh any animal we could have gotten.

Good job for getting it done on your own.

Nice buck Wiz! Looks good to me! A solo hunt is always rewarding!

WTG Wiz. I was wondering how you'd do.

I'm sitting on 10 NR points going into next year's draw. Still not convinced West Desert/Vernon is the way to burn 'em.

Nice work Steve, hope you had a good time. I'd love to have another Vernon tag someday, it's a neat place to chase deer.

Congrats, be proud of that buck!

Hey Andy- I wasnt the first to post the pic. If you go down in the mule deer forum a bit, elkassassin AKA el doucho baggo, posted it. LOL!

I appreciate all the kind words guys. It was a very fun hunt. A personal challenge to say the least. Sunday and Monday the wind blew like crazy...and being in that wind tunnell of a canyon didn't help. I thought for sure my trailer was gonna get jacked up. It held up like a champ. I ran across quite a few hunters and they all were very nice and considerate. Most guys that rode or drove past my camp slowed down as to not kick up dust. They all waved....they'd stop to find out what I'd been seeing and where I've been hunting. I gotta say that we as hunters are somewhat like a fraternity. Its nice to know that we have eachothers backs and want success for eachother.
I ran into a guy on the north side of Little Valley when I was looking for that big 2x3 and he had just shot a little forked horn. I asked if he needed help dragging him out.....thought it was the right thing to do. He told me that he'd be able to handle it so I told him congrats and moved on. I believe in Karma because when I got my buck down, I was offered help. Just food for thought in relation to my hunt. I really had a good time and met some really cool people. I was sent some pics of some bigger deer by friends of a friend. Congrats to those hunters. I will continue to put in for this hunt....not because I think I can kill a big one, but because I have good memories of the area.

Payback is coming somehow, BESS. Just not sure how or when....but it's coming. Don't be surprised if you don't have brakes one of these cold mornings. LOL

Did you shoot anything?

Steve, congratulations on a very fine hunt and good buck. Every buck is unique and special. You were very successful.

I had no idea you did it solo. That is probably one of the hardest things to do, especially far from home over many days in strange country. Given those circumstances I would say you did super!

Congratulations Mr. Wiz
That is a fine looking buck.
I hunted the Vernon a couple of times back when it was first made LE. It was always a blast to hunt there, and while we never saw any monsters, we always saw plenty of bucks.
Hopefully you can return soon.

BESS- DH's camp killed several good bucks....one stud in particular. Thats all I can say about that. I spoke with him on Saturday mid-day after all tags were filled. Give him a cal and have him send pics.

Nice Buck. Liked your comment about the memories, I have memories of this unit myself. My first Deer hunt was in Harker canyon in around 1980 before it was limited entry. Killed a monster (2 point about 8" wide) lol. Was the only hunt I was able to go with my grandpa, He died the next year. So ya... Memories mean more than the size or success of the hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-01-12 AT 09:11PM (MST)[p]Congrats on a nice buck! Hunted there many times before it was LE, it was fun even back then.
