this past weekend was a good one as far as hunting goes. my wife had been prety bummed about not being able to arrow an elk in september. that bad feeling has been replaced....with a buck. i had been watching a couple of respectable bucks in my favorite spot.
one buck was better than the rest but i didnt want to get my hopes up because my favorite spot is also a few other hunters favorite spot. i have been hunting this area for about 5 years and never saw another human track much less another hunter. friday befor the hunt right on que one regular buck and the better buck showed their faces alot lower than usual. all i could hope was that no one else was glassing this evening. opening morning my wife and i hiked into position and set up befor shooting light. i was feeling realy good about our game plan. some bulls caught our eye and we watched the bachler group for a while when a shot let out behind us....close behind us!my heart sank and i pictured the big buck downed by atv hunter as we had heard some atvs ten minutes earlier. i told my wife that there were more than one buck in the area and no sooner than i got done saying the word "area", two more shots rang out. the second shot definately had a distinctive whop sound to it. the bulls just watch and wondered who was down. i considered it a long shot and decieded to work away from the shots in hopes of running into a spooked deer. we headed in the same direction as the elk and got alot closer to them than i expected. (where were they last week?) we joked about how they know when deer season starts and elk ends. 8:00am we gained a little elivation and could see the ATVers but no antlered cargo. while glassing i could hear the unmistakeable sound of stotting slightly above us. walking 40 yards further up hill i look up to the sight of a good buck watching our aproach 80 yards away. grabing the lil lady by the shoulders and placing her in my shooting lane while getting her rifle on the stix i told her "there he is". by the time she found him in the scope he had started moving and went over a littlle ridge. i saw the disapointment in her face and told her its not over. we creept to the top of the ridge to look dows a drainage and up another finger ridge. we sat there and glassed. by now even i was getting worried about perhaps loosing our oportunity. i got so worried i resorted to launching rocks down into the drainage in hopes of flushing him up onto the opposite hill side. to both our suprise he showed up 230yds away but was not slowing down she settled in and made a shot and i saw the deer crumble and roll on the steep terrain, out of sight. we gave him half an hour and slowly worked up and around to his last known possition. upon arrival i could see where the buck collapsed and roled got up and ran down and slightly down hill. the tracks were verry distinct and shown laboring travel. we found blood and where he laid down. blood got better and better and then the buck was standing there and we got another shot in him and he was done. her smile said it all. the only down side is that she is now ruined....how am i going to help her top this next year?
this was the 130grain barnes tipped tripple shock sent on the initial shot. its a good thing the second shod perfomed correctly.
