About a month ago I ask my son what he wanted for his birthday when he turned eight on Oct. 27th. He said that he wanted to go deer hunting with me. So all this season I held out for one of the bigger bucks I had scouted but on Saturday I was planning on shooting the first 4 point I saw. Although I had hopes of taking one of the bigger bucks, I was really happy to take this one with my son and friend Tom there to help out. Tom first spotted this buck, then we kept losing it and refinding it again in the timber for about an hour before it finally came out at 330 yards and I was able to put it down. The smile on my son's face says it all. We ended up hiking a couple miles in some really steep, brushy stuff, with about 6" of snow, but my son never complained at all. What a trooper.

Man, that is cool that your 8 year old wanted to hunt with you, even better is that you got to take out a nice buck.

Yeah, we all hate settling for those heavy horned, 24" bucks, scoring about 155"... :D :D

Great job and way to get your son stoked about hunting..!!

Koby,
You da Man!
At least in your son's eyes! And from my perspective, that is as good as it gets! I have not hunted without my son since he was 10 and he is now 26. The tables soon turn, though and now he is the one worried about the old man complaining about the steep mountains. LOL

Hopefully you are on a journey you will find great joy in, as I have!
Way to go partner!
Nice buck too!

Thanks for the comments guys. What a great year and to end it with my son being there, was awesome. It's amazing to think that our group went 7 for 7 with all 3 point or better general season, public land bucks. Mine being the 5th smallest in the group.

Dang!!! Awesome! Yep, I have to second little bighorns comment. Wast too long ago I was trailing my dad and grandfather around hunting....now it is me that is just trying to keep up with my boys......crazy how fast it goes also so done even think about missing 1 season with the youngsters. I caught more flack from the school cause I would take them out to Colorado every year but now....... The boys will never miss the 2 weeks a year they missed of Jr High and High School but they will NEVER forget those hunting trips! All those teachers would load us down with home work every trip.....crazy! So I would have the boys write an essay on the practical lessons learned during each hunting trip. Biology........we got to dissect elk and deer while the class did some old dried up frog. Science.......my dad was a retired 33 year science teacher so that consumed a lot of chat in the 19 hour drive. P.E...........the class would play volleyball or some sport for 48 minutes a day....we would hike miles from sun up to sun down everyday. History......you can read about history in books at school or you can go hunting in Southern Colorado and actually walk where the Indians did...go to Mesa Verde, see the Indian writings in Moab, stop by the largest dinosaur dig in the world which is in Central Utah. Both my boys got to go to the petrified forest, grand canyon, meteor curator and the site of the largest Indian Killing of white settlers called the beaver massacre and the Modoc Indian wars. Anyway....I could go on for days and not even include ballistic coofficiancy or just plain old family time. Don't ever let it go!

That picture pretty much sums up what "it" is all about. When you are gumming your applesauce and that boy is changing your diapers, you will be more proud of that buck than a bigger buck taken sans 8 year old admirer/son.

Congrats!

Well done young man! .....and congrats to Mr Rigde for setting his feet on the right path!

7 for 7..?? You need to post picks of all seven of them and put them up on HghCntryHuntrs Thread where he says they're the greatest hunting family out there... :D
