I shot this buck on the second to last day of the hunt. I had a chance at a really tall and heavy 4 point, but the firing pin wouldn't hit the primer hard enough! I tried 5 different times to shoot him.... as i watched him push does and chase off other bucks. Damn the luck. I was happy to get this buck even though he wasn't exactly what i was hoping for. My grandpa made the trip out to hunt with my dad and i for the day and was right by my side when i shot him. He was happy to see me kill a deer and i was happy both him and my dad were there. I passed a few deer during the hunt that would be more of the average type, but i think this one breaks the mold a bit.

His front knee was the size of a baseball and wouldn't bend at all. I'm guessing it was broken quite some time ago and may explain for the funky rack. By the looks of his teeth he seemed to be pretty old.

This is his hoof with a 30-06 shell.

Very unique buck. Nothing better than having grandpa and dad right there with u, no matter how old u are. That is a hunt to be proud of. Is the buck u r having mounted a yeah deer? Any pics?

Cool looking buck. That rack you're having mounted is sweet. Will be nice to see the finished product.

That is one funky, old deer... That's awesome that you have a super sweet rack to use his cape on... Congrats on a fantastic hunt.!!

Nothing better than killing a nice buck with Grandpa and Dad along. Great buck, Congrats! What state?

This is a Utah buck off the Oak creek. The buck that I'm having mounted with this bucks cape was shot in the 50's near Scofield. I'll post a pic when it's on .the wall.

Congrat's that is one CRAZY TALL rack. Better get that rifle to a good gunsmith and find out what the problem is with that firing pin. Thanks for sharing the story and Pics.

My grandpa gave me a winchester 30-06 model 70 that I wanted to kill a buck with. I had it dialed in before the hunt and was confident with it. Opening day while hiking in some rocky cliffs, I lost my footing and hit the butt of the gun. That's the only thing I can think of that could've caused it. I used another gun to kill this buck, but I'm glad we were all together for the kill.

Remove the bolt and clean the firing pin on that model 70. Don't use oil, but graphite / teflon if any lubricant is needed. Old oil can gum up the firing pin and result in light primer strikes. This is something that can easily be accomplished at home, and you really don't need a gunsmith. Just put the safety in the middle position, and with the bolt removed unscrew the firing pin assembly from the back of the bolt.

Thanks for the advise, I will have to do that and see how it goes. I was surprised to see that the bullet didn't fire, it still had a pretty got indent on the primer from the pin.
