Does the DWR create an odds report for the DH tags? Did anybody not draw a DH tag in 2012? I'm just trying to find out if there is any info posted up on this. I looked around the DWR website and couldn't find anything.

Thanks,

HJB

I too cannot find any info on the site. Do they do the draw completely separate from the general draw or if you draw a general tag and there is room in the dedicated hunter pool, then they give you that choice too? I'm not sure how it works now...

Not sure. I was in the program when it first started, but I'm not sure what has changed since then. I want to get on it again next year.

I did hear that the draw would be done through the regular draw, but I want to know my odds before I apply for a permit.

I think it may depend on if you had points from being a DH previously. I drew my area for a 2nd term meaning another 3 years. I think the DWR pretty much hands out as many tags to as many DHers as possible. They get more revenue from the tags and they love all of the service hours that we do. I do it because I like to have a guaranteed tag each year. Plus I don't see that the tag reductions statewide did much. There were more hunters in my area than the 2 previous years.

So what you are saying is: If you apply, you are most likely going to draw.

Correct?

I just kind of want to know if there are guys out there that didn't draw this year.

The DH odds are not on the website for some reason.

I had a contact at the DWR email me the odds, and 90% or more of the units were 100% chance of drawing for 2012.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-15-12 AT 12:15PM (MST)[p]The Dedicated Hunter program was capped at a maximum of 10,000 tags a few years back. When they upped the service hours to 40 a bunch of guys dropped out of the program and so did the demand for tags. Since then the total number of deer tags has also dropped and the website now states 15% of available tags for any unit can go to dedicated hunters. So given that standard, it is impossible to determine what the odds for getting a DH tag will be on any unit. You can see what they were for this year, but depending on how many guys are still in their 3 years, you won't know how many new openings there are in each unit for new DHs.
I'd say it's kind of a crap shoot, but I am in my 3rd year, so I won't have to worry about it for another year.

My son did not draw a dh permit this year for the Pahvant. He has been a dh every year since he was 14 he is now 22 . Lucky for him he drew a Pahvant general season so he was able to hunt. So far he is the only one I met that didn't draw a dh permit for 2012 he will be applying again.

You guys that didn't draw, are you applying for smaller unit down south? Seems like Northern Utah (Where I want to hunt) would be a little easier to draw. There are always leftovers.

I put in this year for the DH program with 2 general season points & a DH Loyalty point from being in the program previously and did not draw. I asked the DWR to explain to me how I didn't draw, they gave me the run around and I left with no good answer. The only thing they could tell me was the DH loyalty points don't benefit you any more because of the unit changes.

Dedicated hunter was tough to draw this year because being the first year of change all the current dedicated hunters had preference for their unit of choice and were guaranteed to be in the program. Only a certain amount of ded hunters are allowed in each unit and if the limit was met by current hunters in the program no one could draw that unit.It will get easier to draw as years go by and things balance out.

2012 was my 4th time registering and being accepted for the dedicated hunter program. I have also been wondering whether or not if the the dedicated hunters are included in the general season permits. I have looked all over the Utah proclamations and website, but I have not been able to find out if we are included in the general seasons or not. There is no mention of dedicated hunters in the draw odds at all. Are dedicated hunters not included in the total number of permits? How do they account for those of us that are actually in the program while attempting to manage a status quo of hunters?
