NR Dedicated hunter Southwest desert

Ok guys I am looking for any help I can get for the dedicated hunter permit for southwest desert. I have never hunted the unit in fact this is my first Utah permit. Any info I can get will be helpful.
I have good knowledge of the northern part of the state but nothing in the South. I am looking for a big mule deer. I would rather take a doe for meat then to shoot a small buck.
When I broke the state down before applying I thought this unit would give me the best chance of drawing a unit and getting a large mule deer. Once again any and all info will be researched so everything helps no matter how small you think it is.
This will be a DIY hunt on my back.

I plan on spending the whole season down there unfortunately I cannot get down there with my bow but plan on scouting then doing muzzleloader and rifle season if I have to learn the area the first year and then hunt hard as I can take all my vacation for the 3 seasons next year. That is a good buck for sure and have my sights sets on a 200" deer so that one would be going down for sure.
How well do you know the area? Have you ever hunted it? If so what was the result? I will be getting my maps built as soonas I get home.

I am sorry but I did not have my mm email set up yet I have it squared away now will you please resend. Thank you

I spend a ton of time on that unit, and it's really not a deer unit. I've killed bucks on it, but it is hard. It's not unusual to go days without seeing a deer. Too bad you don't have a horse tag.

Well i do not need lots of deer just one. What part of the unit do you spend your time in? Do you have any names of pointson the map you are referring to? Lots of wild horses huh well maybe I will bring a rope and a saddle and cover a lot of the country really quick lol

I spend time on the entire unit. I live close, and hunt it every year, for one thing or another. I had a muzz deer tag last year, and it was tough. I ate tag soup. The year before, my wife killed a smaller 4 point buck on the west side of the unit. I put in for a different unit for Dedicated hunter, and drew it this year. I didn't even put SWD as a second choice. Horses are ruining the unit, and its managed for elk, not deer. All that aside, its a cool place to spend some time, and I'm sure you'll have a blast. One positive thing is, its not hard to find a spot all to yourself.

Where do you live? How much time have you spent in the southern part of the unit? How much of the area is road less? Can I get 10 miles from a road? How much water is in the unit? What is the best season to hunt?

I live in Central, which is a bit south of the Southern boundry. I stay on the south end mostly, as do most of the hunters. Usually you think of the unit as east and west, instead of north and south. It's split down the middle by a mountain range. Your not going to get 10 miles from a road, unfortunately, at least nowhere that I know of. Water varies from year to year, but it can be found. For as dry a unit as it is, there is a pretty fair amount of water. Every single bit of it will have a camera on it. I don't really have an opinion on which hunt is the best, as that, too, varies from year to year. Not just on the SWD, but the Pine Valley unit as well.
