We got drawn for deer. This will be our first year to hunt this area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Pm me or email [email protected]. Is this considered a trophy hunt area? Thank you.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-30-13 AT 07:06PM (MST)[p]There are nice deer in 87, but IMO I wouldn't consider it a trophy area. It is over hyped by Huntin' Fool. If you are looking for a 130" to 150" buck you will have a fun hunt. If you are looking for 180+, good luck! You will definitely see deer, and it will be fun hunt. I will PM you my number if you want to discuss the area further. Good luck!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-13 AT 12:38PM (MST)[p]+1. The unit is fun and has good deer, but not as great as people make it out to be, I had the tag a couple years back. The mountain is awesome one of my favorite places to go explore. The deer will tend to be on the bottom 1/2. I have spent days on top with no real luck. They tend to bed in the trees a little way up and feed out in the night. When I hunted it, I spent 2 weekends in the archery season with a bow. Passed on a good 160ish buck hoping for bigger. I spent 6 days during the rifle season looking as well. I hunted hard and covered a lot of the unit. I wound up with a 150 4x4. I know of one buck that year taken in the upper 170s. I have a good friend who hunts it every other year between him or his wife. Best they have gotten was a 150s buck.

The archery hunting was a blast. The south side of the mountain typically has fewer people. Deer will be found all over the unit and do not over look the sand dunes and sage flats. On the west side of the unit is a big sandy mountain called bear mountain I believe. It is hard to access due to the sand, but I found it to be the only place I could escape other hunters.

Also last year it was on fire. I am not sure how it has changed things, but the elk really moved out. The east end of teh unit got burnt pretty hard. It might be years for good regrowth.

Hunted this area for antelope for the past 3 years and although we didn't hunt the mountain or higher up in the timber we did see some nice deer down lower in the drainages coming off Ferris. Most were tucked into what appeared to be bitter brush out of the sun. No gagger bucks but nothing to scoff about either. Seemed toward the early and later parts of the day you'd see them come outta the lower timber areas on into the head end of the flats drainages. to get a drink and feed. Remember the eastern portion of Ferris burned off last year but was reseeded in the fall too. I am not sure how well regrowth has started.

Funny from what I saw and heard from the area biologist, the burn is void of animals right now. There is just starting to be a little growth. that fire was hot and really killed everything. I bet it will be next year maybe even 2 before the animals are back on it. the country is good but the elk sure have not showed back up. Most are still on Green or in the unit to the east...

I haven't seen it, They did say those rains that pass thru really started the green up and the deer are starting to filter back into the area that had burnt, They didn't say anything about elk just that they had seen some deer when they passed by going to fish on two different times.
But if it gets some more rain it should bounce back quicker then 2-3 years. This years winter snow will make the different is that, with good moisture to start next years growth.

They did say the fishing wasn't great, But they did ok.
