Colorado Deer - Unit 54 - 3rd Season

I drew a unit 54, 3rd season deer tag this year and would welcome any advice or input on what to expect.
I was hoping to make it down for a scouting trip, but it looks like I will be going in cold other than what I can study off maps and google earth.

How many points did you have? Resident or NR? Good luck. If you get weather...could be awesome on or around Nov 7th. Lucky seven.

I am a NR and drew it with 8 points.

I will be traveling from Idaho, around 550 miles trek or so.
I have horses that I can bring, but I am guessing they wouldn't be worth the hassle if most of the deer have moved out of the high country.
A couple of questions for those familiar with the area.
1. Would it be worthwhile to bring horses or just plan on burning some boot leather?
2. Are there any hunter friendly hotels in Gunnison to recommend?
