When I married my wife 18 yrs ago she was not into hunting AT ALL but she was very supportive of my obsession with it. The only problem, which most married men can probably relate to, is that she felt left out when I would go hunting and leave her home. Well, that all changed about 10 years ago when out of the blue she decided to take Hunter's Safety. She figured - "if you can't beat them - join them". She has been my hunting partner ever since and it has been awesome to have her along. The frustrating part is that for the past 10 years of hard hunting she was yet to bag her first big game animal. We had been hunting the general rifle deer seasons and while there were a few opportunities she just wasn't able to seal the deal.

After accompanying me on my Book Cliffs hunt last year she was spoiled and discouraged at the same time. We saw TONS of bucks which was great but it gave her a bad taste in her mouth when she thought of the general season and the number of deer, let alone bucks we would see or the lack there of.

After the season last year I mentioned to her that she might have better success of seeing bucks if she took up archery. I let her know that seeing the bucks and harvesting one is two very different things but at least she would see them.

Long story short - I bought her a bow, got her shooting regularly and tried to build her confidence. I didn't know what success the year would bring but we were going to give it a try.

Opening day of archery season found us roaming the hills and at first we just weren't seeing anything. I was getting a bit discouraged myself but unknown to me is that my wife was very optimistic. After a while we saw our first buck but he just wouldn't give my wife an ethical shot and she very wisely passed. Shortly after that it seemed like the flood gates opened and we started seeing bucks everywhere - some small ones and some really good ones. After quite a fast paced adventure in trying to get on bucks and after several close calls we were finally able to find 3 bucks together and one of them stood still just a bit too long.

At the shot I saw the deer lunge forward and knew it was a perfect shot and that that was a dead deer walking. My wife on the other hand looked at me and asked - "did I hit it"? :)

After letting her know how perfect of a shot it was we quickly got on the trail as a big storm was rolling in and we didn't want to lose the trail in the rain. We didn't have to look hard as the deer only went about 60 yrds and was stone dead when we got to it.

It was an awesome experience and I am soooo proud of my sweet wife for FINALLY putting one on the ground - and with a bow too!!!

We couldn't have had the successful morning that we did if it wasn't for my cousin who was with us the whole time! Thanks bud I owe you!!!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-10-13 AT 10:03PM (MST)[p] That's a great story. It's great to see all the hard work finally paid off for your wife. Getting any animal with your bow is an amazing accomplishment and getting a buck makes it that much better. Congrats.

Awesome! Looks like a gun shot wound behind those front shoulders! What kind of broad head.

Thats awesome man. My wife and I have been married for 10 years and I havnt been able to to get her out in the woods with me yet! Youre a lucky man!

Big congrats to both of you. Great story and more importantly, you have a new and best hunting partner. My wife was also slow to start hunting with me, but we go together often now and it is the best of times.

That is awesome! congrats to both of you. Bummer it took so long but it made the hunt even more special to both of you :)

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

Nicely done, the only thing sweeter then your wife hunting with you is any KIDS hunting with you. I hope your wife kills some monsters in the future.
