Made it back from my Vernon hunt today, had a great time hunting with my wife. This hunt started out unexpected as we went into the draw with four points each. Into the summer months time was spent scouting and shooting and preparing for the upcoming hunt. While scouting located a couple bulls and decided to hunt them during the archery hunt. What could be better than chasing bulls while scouting for a good buck.
During the same night of finding the bulls found the buck I refer to as number 1 which was the buck I would concentrate on. Number one proved to be very elusive and disappeared over the months. Here is the only pic I was able to get of him right at dark sorry for the poor quality.
During the elk hunt located a buck that became my new number 1 as he was very visible during the archery hunt and we could locate him daily.
Day one found us hunting the area the double cheater buck has been hanging out, but with high winds and little deer movement day one turned up empty. Day two was the same high winds but turned up a few bucks. Then the storm rolled in and finding deer seemed to be tougher some bucks was turned up but nothing worth taking a second look at. The morning after the storm.
After the storm time was spent searching several spots on the unit but still no shooter bucks being turned up. Monday day six I headed back into the area the double cheater buck has been seen in. Hiked into the canyon and found three bucks with a decent four point in the heard, watched them go over the ridge and decided to try and take the buck. After they went over the ridge headed as fast as I could over the top of the ridge where I thought they might show up, sat down and waited. After about 30 minutes the showed up on the opposite side of the ridge, picked out the four point ranged him at 198 yards, settled on my shooting sticks and let her fly. After the smoke cleared my buck was lying where he stood a perfect shoulder hit.
All in all a fun hunt with lots of miles hiked. But a tag still in my wife's pocket and two days to go the double cheater buck is still on the hit list!
