Headed out to Oregon this past week to do some Mule deer hunting. Had a great trip and came home with some great memories and some deer.
Thought this pic was pretty cool.
My goal for the trip was to get everyone a deer but most importantly I wanted to get the two first timers their deer. The first person is a young kid (15) and he has hunted before but has yet to kill anything. We headed down a road that we had been hunting and low and behold this buck is just standing off the road about 60 yards. Off hand he fires and hits the buck. Not the best shot and has to place another and it as well didn't hit the right place but I was able o move in quickly to finish the kill. He was excited to say the least. I have hunted or been hunting with his father ever since I was crawling. So it made it very memorable. His Buck.
Later that evening my wife who has also never killed a big game animal wanted to go hunting with myself. I was more than happy to go along and teach her what I know. Well we decided to drive a road just down from where the young kid killed his deer to see what we could see. At about 5:30 on the dot she looks up into the timber and says to me, "Big Buck" so I stop the truck and turn off the key as she is flying out of the door. She jacks a round into the chamber and I come around the other side. I look and see a buck running and I pull up. Just then I hear Kaboom. The buck keeps running and I am not able to get a shot off. I say to her that he got away and you missed. She then says, "no he fell." I kind of argue over the fact that the buck was still running. "No" she says and she then tells me to walk up the hill with her. Alright I think as I just saw the buck run off and I knew that this would make her happy. Well low and behold as I get about 40 yards away I look up and see this.
Holy S%$T is all I could say. Go get the camera I told her. How in the world did I not see this buck? She got back up there and it was all hugs and high fives. She made a perfect shot and dropped this brute in about 20 yards. It was about a 80-90 yard shot. We took lots of pictures and then began the work of taking care of the animal. She is spoiled now and I am hoping her luck never runs out. My wife's buck.
Punching her tag.
So after some thought I got to thinking about the other buck that was with the one up above. He was unique in his own way, I have never seen a mule deer with blonde looking antlers or face. Let alone a lot of blonde. This buck just kept popping into my head for the next 3 days. Well Tuesday morning as I head up the same road my wife killed her buck I come around the corner and I see a buck. I wasn't going to be picky as we were on a time constraint and I just wanted a deer. I jump out and the buck runs into the timber. He then stops and turns at about 80 yards and I pull up and let a round off. He lunges forward and I take off and as i crest the small hill I see him fall. Here is the buck as he lay.
As luck would have it this is the same buck that was running with my wife's buck and I had nicknamed him Blondie. I ended up taking him at about 800 yards farther up the road from where the big buck was taken.
All-in-all it was a great trip even though it was cold, snowy and raining. Lot's of great memories made and many more to come. Now it's on to trying to fill our mule deer tags in Idaho.
