LAST EDITED ON Oct-21-13 AT 01:33PM (MST)[p]Just had the opportunity to take my father out for what may very well be his last hunt. He has cherished the outdoors all his life, and it has been what has kept him going for many years. His health has been waning, and there are signs of dementia showing up, but I had a goal to make this hunt successful and rewarding. He has been my hero, and has taught me what it means to be a hunter. Has always been there to share the experience. Most people look at this as being held back, but what they don't understand is how it holds me UP! On the first morning of Utah's hunt I was able to get him within 150 yards of a 2-point buck, which he took with one shot from his trusty old Springfield 30-06. It was a rewarding day, and truly a trophy experience for me! A proud Son!

hell ya! That is awesome. I hope I can get that kind of mileage out of my lifetime license. Keep him going. Hopefully we'll hear about it again next year.

That is great you were able to share another hunt with him. I hope you guys can share some more. Congrats on your successful hunt and unforgettable memories.

Thanks for the post.

I remember my grandmother telling me about her dad's last deer hunt. It would have been in the early 70's. They lived in Panguitch. He was really frail. She said he put on his red shirt and red hat and got his gun. He took her and her mother on a drive. She asked him what he was going to do if he saw one. He replied "I'll shoot the son ...." She worried they would see one, but they didn't.

Good job setting your dad up.

My Dad's last hunt was at 85 yrs. young, too! I spotted a small forky with some does, running away from us. I sized up the terrain, sat Dad down in a comfy camp chair, circled around a rock outcrop. I flushed the deer very close; it worked out great! I sat to watch as the deer went right by him at about 75 yards... thought I'd get to watch his posssibly last kill...he kept glassing 'em as they headed down the country! When I got to him, he said,"Nice bunch of deer.Too bad there wasn't a buck with them!" I guessed he couldn't make out the antlers! That night in camp, we had a medical emergency, so our hunt was over, and it turned out to be our last actual hunting moments together.I'm glad your Dad was able to "get 'er done",but my last hunting experience with my Dad is a cherished one for me, too. Thanks for posting,it enabled me to recapture the precious moments for a brief while.

Glad I didn't miss this thread! What an awesome memory. You need to hang that rack and that photo on the wall.

Awesome story and congrats to you and your dad. My dad is 75 and we leave for our annual Colorado elk trip on Monday. Hope we have as good of luck as you did.

That's what its about right there. Gone are the days of "putting meat on the table" for most of us. Good memories.

Blow that picture up and frame it and put it with the rack on the wall, Great picture.
