Halloween Monster on the Henry's

I first want to thank those who replied to my earlier post about my son drawing this management tag on the Henry's. I'm more of a picture guy, but here is the semi-short version of our hunt for those of you who like story. My son Dakota, our good friend Zac and myself headed down to the Henry?s last Friday and scouted all day Saturday and Sunday. Of course we seen a ton of bucks and a lot of great 4x4's and bigger bucks, but the bigger management bucks were very hard to come by. The opener was Monday and we decided to keep trying to find a big management buck instead of going after the couple we and everyone else had spotted. I knew a lot of people would be after the same few bucks and I really wanted to find something special for my son. Of course as everyone knows Monday was a terrible day as the wind blew hard all day long. A few good bucks were killed, but for the most part the deer were staying put and out of the wind. I friend of mine was lucky enough to shoot a stud of a buck. The buck was 30 inches wide with a 3x3 frame with kickers and unbelievable eye guards. Truly a buck of a lifetime. My only hope was that we too would find something that good. Dakota and I had to leave Monday night as he had a couple of tests and assignments that he had to take care of back at school. We left Zac on the mountain to keep looking and to try and find that special buck. We told Zac we would be back Wednesday night and if he found something good to text some pics and we would decide if it was a buck worth going after. On Tuesday Zac spotted several great bucks but only a few decent management bucks. One buck he sent pics of looked like a heavy 28 inch 3x4, but he also looked like he may of had a small fork on his 3 side thus making him a 4x4. We figured we would try and locate him on Thursday and get a better look at him if we did not have any other options. Fortunate for us Zac spotted a monster Wednesday morning crossing the road. The buck gave Zac a good look before disappearing into the buck brush and cedars. From this short look he was positive he was a straight 3x4. Zac quickly found phone service and called me to inform me of the good news. I told Zac if the buck was as good as he thought then he should try and locate him again and make sure he was a management buck. That evening found Zac glassing the cedars and to his surprise the buck was bedded 100 yards from where he had seen him earlier that morning. Zac was able get some great video and pictures of the monster buck. My best friend and hunting brother Donald, Dakota and myself returned to camp late Wednesday night. Zac showed us the video and pics of this monster buck and our minds were set to try and locate him the next morning. A very sleepless night came to a close and we found ourselves traveling to where Zac had seen the buck the night before. We arrived before daylight, split up and waited for the sun to rise so we could start glassing. As the sun rose I spotted about 10 doe?s feeding on the side hill. I kept glassing and there he was. The buck was 300 yards below the doe?s and was feeding up to them. I got on the radio and informed Zac and Dakota of the location of the buck. They quickly located the buck as he was still feeding towards the doe?s. The sound of Dakota?s 25-06 broke the silence. Dakota made a perfect shot at 200 yards and the celebration started. When we walked up to the buck he was even better than we originally thought. He has a huge box frame that measures 33 inches wide and 24 inches tall. His main beams are 24 inches long and he has an inside spread of 25 inches. We later taped him out at just over 182?. Not bad for a 3x4 with a crabby fork on his 4 side. What a great way to spend Halloween,truely a modern day Halloween Monster. I could not be happier that Dakota was able to harvest such a great buck. Zac did a wonderful job and spent countless hours in finding in finding this buck and Donald and I were just happy we could be a part of such a special hunt. A special thanks to Donald for always being there, to Zac for all his hard work and a very special thanks to my Son Dakota for turning week?s worth of hunting into a lifetime of great memories. The Henry?s are a special place and I hope we can all preserve the magic that exist there for a long time.

WOW!!! What a bruiser of a buck! I'd probably shoot him with any tag if I could keep the gun from shaking! Great job by your son and hunting partners, congrats.

Stud buck!

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

You guys have some balls to leave for a day or two during the middle of a shortened hunt as compared to normal LE hunts. I do commend you for school being the reason. You got a top mgmt deer, it's a stud. Congrats!

I said it before and I'll say it again;
CONGRATULATIONS on a sweet trophy! (to all of you)
You have the right to be a proud papa, ciscokid!

That is a MONSTER! congrats :)

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

Gorgeous buck! Congrats - that is quite a trophy for the whole family!

HOOK 'EM!

Sorry for the ignorance but do the eye guards not count as points when talking about management bucks? Also you said a friend took a nice 3x3 with cheaters. Do the cheaters not count either on a management buck? Just curious.

Eye guards do not count and they need only have three or fewer points on one side. The other side can have any number of points.

Cis, Nice work on the buck! That thing is a stud. Someone on MM posted a pic of that buck in the velvet earlier this summer. I have it, but can't get it to load. If you don't have it pm me your phone number and I will send it to you. Mark tagged out Tuesday night on a 24 incher.

Ryan- I sent you a PM. That is great Mark tagged out. Thanks to everyone for the all kind comments. The hunt was awesome and just like all of your hunts it was filled with memories that will last forever.

I'd shoot that buck anywhere... He's a stud all around...

Congrats to you and yours on an amazing hunt..!!
