Restoring a deadhead

How much does it cost and who does it? I have a large, over 200" deer that I found and want to explore the options to get it done.

Thanks for any and all info!

I have seen some pretty amazing antler restorations done as well as some horrible ones. It depends on how Chalky the horn has become to how well it can be restored. As far as cost it varies just depending on the condition. Post up some pics.

I'd love to post a pic but cannot get it done.
Can I send it in an email to someone to post?
Thanks,
Deone

Here you go. Flip your screen over and you should be fine;). I did this from my IPad.

Heck of a buck!

It does my heart good to know that some of these giants manage to outsmart the hunters and die of natural causes. (At least I hope this was died that way - could have been hit by a car or shot and never found - but I like to think he died of old age.)

HOOK 'EM!

Are you sure that is over 200", I just don't see it ;-)
Awesome find, that is a great buck!

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

I actually missed this buck 3 years ago at 17 yards in an uncut corn field, arrow deflected off a leaf and stuck in the ground about 3 yards from where he was standing. Hunted him hard the next year and never got a crack at him and he was found dead this spring. I think he was possibly bigger the two previous years but it was really hard to tell...I never found sheds or anything. I hope he was not wounded and just died of natural causes.

I hope you are kidding about him not being 200" :)

Anyway, I'd like to have the antlers restored, can anyone suggest someone to call. I've looked on the internet and it seems like all of them have a "fake" coloration.

No question that buck is 200"+ , awesome find . Contact Ralph or Steve Stayner , they have done some amazing restoration work on Antlers !! You can reach them at
sage Antlers Reproductions @ 480-854-8590 . These Guys are the only ones I would trust , and Ryan Hatch , Clay Bundy would tell ya the same thing .
Again , Awesome find , get it done man and done right , make your $$ spent worth while, especially on a find like that . Call them . Hope to see finishing results !

A buddy of mine found this monster and gave it to me. It is in a lot worse shape than yours is. I think it turned out pretty good. My taxi just did it for me. I put it in velvet to help hide all the hairline weather cracks.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-08-13 AT 01:39PM (MST)[p]IDHunter: Thats an awesome find of a lifetime as well , very fortunate to have a great buddy to just hand that Bad Boy over to ya !! Second , that is really not a bad idea going w/ the velvet !! Thats something I'm gonna keep in mind , Thanks . Mike .

Also found a sweet deadhead. Got with a game warden and he sold it to me for $10. I'm going to try to restore it and put it on a mountain mikes skull. It's not super big maybe mid 160s. My guess is a lion kill. According to the teeth he wasn't very old.

Gonna try to restore it myself. In the past I have used snow seal boot sealer on sheds and it does the job.

You can do it yourself pretty easily. I found a nice set elk set a couple years ago, pretty much hard white like what you have there. I did coat them first with wood stain to give them an overall color, but mud was the best thing I found. Just rub and grind it into the horns, just like a deer or elk would do.

Cool story, to go with that buck. At least you found him, better late than never :)
Yes, I was joking, the "wink" after my comment. There are no 200"+ deer allowed to be posted on MM's...

Hunted this buck for 2 years, got Him the 3rd. Only one problem, he had been dead for almost a year! Bleached and some cracks, so I set out to restore this great rack. Didn't like the look of stain on my practices sheds. So I did what the buck would have done. I took very pitchy pine limbs and rubbed my brains out. When I got the tips the way I liked them I rubbed wax on them so they would stay lighter. Then back to work, ruba duba. then when you rub in the dirt some of it works in and fills the cracks. Even slashed the whole rack against bushes and pines. As you can see it worked, even fooled the local games warden. I put some blood and rubbed meat into the skull plate. Then showed him the deer I shot. Then of course I showed him the pics I had taken of the restoration. Be sure and use practice sheds so you don't mess up the rack!!!!

snagpoint, looks great! Now lets see some before and after picks of how much your arms swelled up doing all that rubbing! LOL. I don't think I could do that much rubbing to turn them brown again :)

It's been along time, (mid 1980's) but I think I may have done a light stain and then rubbed the rack.
This deer I shot in Unit 11 on a draw hunt.

Much to my shock, when I cleaned up the rack most of the brown came off.
it was mud and dirt, this buck never really rubbed on pines only bushes and rocks and dirt. Looked awful, So back to rubba dubba (hint: you can take globs of pitch off a pine and use it to coat the rack as you rub) And old dead branches with no bark (I used cottonwood) rub off their stain. Hope this helps you, and hunters who want to restore racks. snagpoint

Thanks for all the information. Although I a really a do it yourself guy, I'm not sure I have the interest in rubba-dub-dub, although it looks awesome. I'm looking into several options. Have had several pms. Thanks everyone
