Our group spent a week in north east MT on the opener and like usual, had one heck of a good time chasing deer and birds up there.

The mature deer were few and far between this season, so we felt very fortunate to get what we did. We know the area doesn't really hold much for trophy class bucks, buck we still hunt hard and try the get the biggest deer we can turn up. In 6 full days of hunting, the 3 of us only saw 5 or 6 mature bucks big enough to try for.

On day 3, the first mature deer we saw was a definate shooter for the area, after a couple misses by my old man and brother (haha, had to throw that in there), we was able to track him down again and the old man made a heck of a shot and put him down.

The old mans buck:

The second to take a buck was my brother. We spotted this buck a ways off and he wasn't too leery so we got to the last spot we seen him and then spotted him about a half mile away. The wind was in our favor and me and my brother took off on the run to close the distance since it was getting fairly low on light and we crested one last hill and spotted him feeding, my brother made a 200 yard shot and he was down.

Beau's buck:

On the last day we was there, we spotted this guy from the truck and seen he was good enough to take so I quickly got out and set up and shot. I missed... He was even bedded at 200 yards, luckily I hit him the second shot and dropped him on the third. And yes, I got to hear all about it for making fun of them for missing earlier.

All in all we had a great trip to Montana. The weather was great, the birds were plentiful and the time spent in the country with family and friends was unforgettable.

There was 6 of us in camp, and we went 4 for 6 on bucks. My buddy shot one right at dark on the last night, but didn't take any pictures or I'd have posted that one with as well. We had 2 trucks with 3 people in each one and we covered a lot of ground, on foot and in the vehicle. We hunted long and hard to turn up the deer we did, which made it all that much more memorable.

Good luck to everyone else who still has a tag in Montana!

Wow I live in NE Montana and you guys did really well. The deer numbers are way down. There have not been very many bucks like the ones you guys shot taken in my area. Very Very few. Good work!!
