Was out shed hunting and came across this hanging on a little tree limb. What do you all make of it. While walking along I looked up and saw a bigger piece of red cloth hanging in a tree and then I saw this hanging there. It looks like some sort of Indian artifact, but don't know what it could be. There is some beads that look like bone and are painted on as well as some kind of thing that reminds me of a dreamcatcher made out of grass wrapped around something in a circle as well as a pouch of something wrapped up and tied to it. What do you all think it might be. How old do you think it is?

LAST EDITED ON Mar-29-18 AT 09:25AM (MST)[p]It is a sacred Indian artifact. If removed from the location, the person has at least 20 years of bad luck in hunting and drawing tags. I hope you left it in place, and didn't disturb it.

I'd call the Pawn Stars they've got an expert that could come down and take a look at it! Then Rick will offer you tree Fiddy!

the federal agents will turn it over to the da who will then let an antiquities expert write a report and your lawyer will be able to read the report to let you know how old it is

I have had it for about 15 years. The area where I got it is now private property and someone's back yard.

Pretty new, A lot of them still put the antlers back in a cedar tree after they harvest a deer, I have seen them do a prayer before taking part of the deer back seen them wrap up the heart and do a prayer with, I'm sure some Ute or Navajo can tell ya more about that then I can.
Some part of the old ways still are used in their very day life.

Found it hanging on a LITTLE tree limb. That would indicate it was put there not long before you found it. It is intriguing, but doesn't look that old

The cloth in picture number 4 appears to be a synthetic fiber and not cotton or wool and it should not be an older Indian artifact if that is a synthetic fiber cloth.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-30-18 AT 11:09AM (MST)[p]Yes, found it about 15 years ago in northern Utah and I stored it in a box shortly after that, so it has been sitting in a box for 15 years. Something sitting in a box that long with very little change to humidity and such will not deteriorate much. I don't believe it was hanging for very long before that since it looks like modern day material. I was thinking it was maybe a few years old when I found it. I don't know. I did some research though and found that it is considered to be a quill medicine wheel and a prayer tie with some beadwork.

The cloth looks like a fairly modern tied sock. Did you look what was inside there?

No, haven't looked inside. Research I've done on prayer ties show that it's most likely tobacco. More just a conversation piece.

Hi I'm new here but I am a tribal member from Idaho.... what you have found looks to me like what we call a medicine bundle. It's the place you found it most likely was special to whoever left it. It's used in prayer the stuff in the pouch is most likely cedar, sage, and tobacco. The circle with the cross in it is called a medicine wheel it's often colored red, black, white, and yellow and it represents quite a bit and would be hard to explain here. Some type of red fabric is often left with these type of things.

So Binks?

Any Guess on age?

Elkassassin agewise probably was made within a couple years before being hung in the tree. I wouldn't say that it was real old.

Thanks for enlightening us.

If it is indeed a cultural artifact with age (50+ years old), I wouldn't advertise I had it.

Kind of a felony...

Elk, have you ever considered getting a new puppy? You could get that positive feedback you obviously crave whenever you want. Just walk in the room and your little fella goes nuts......every time!

I didn't think it was too old. After doing some research on it I felt I necessary to return it from where I found it. It is laying at the base of the tree from which I found it. Hopefully I did not disturb any spiritual representation it held.

Joesikora as a tribal member I feel my duty is to represent my people in an honest and respectful way. I will try my best to answer questions if I know the answer or explanation.....

GoatT Awesome that you were respectful to place the prayer bundle back. I'm sure you will be blessed for doing so.
