I have been creeping around this site anonymously for a while, but finally decided I had something worth posting. Here is my first buck, although I have been hunting for about a dozen years now. Any guesses as to what he scores?

Great first buck! And first one at that! Score really means nothing but Id guess he will be in the 180s.

Awesome buck. Congrats! Where have you been hunting where it has taken you 12 years to finally kill a buck? Greenland? Just kidding.....but seems like a long time to not harvest your first buck.

Too many tags= unhappy wife

Well this is only the third tag I've had for a buck, but usually after 2-3 critters down in our hunting group, we call it a year. So I guess it just hadn't come together until now. Being in college put a bit of a crunch on the amount of time I could spend in the hills too.

I dont think I would put a tape on him either. There is no question he is a stud! Great buck and even better picture. I'm around 30 years into my hunting and have not even coming close to a buck like that. Very cool.

It was the second rifle season and upon arrival to camp there was about 6 inches of fresh snow on the ground. Saturday and Sunday were relatively uneventful for me, but my dad connected with a 6x6 bull on Saturday morning. On Monday, the weather warmed up significantly and I found myself glassing a quakey patch at about 2 in the afternoon. I noticed my buck about 350 yards out, slowly feeding through the quakeys toward me. I kept trying to find a shooting lane through the trees, but he never stopped in the right spot for a good shot. He disappeared into a draw and I thought I had blown my chance at him. At this point, I didn't know he was the size of buck he was, but just knew he was a nice 4x4, at least. All of a sudden, after being out of sight for about 5 minutes, he appeared on the hillside below me, feeding up almost directly at me. He fed to within 30 yards of me when he stopped broadside and I got my shot. One shot and he crumpled where he stood. The whole thing really got my heart going; I couldn't believe my luck that he fed right up to me, out of all possible game trails he could've taken. It was a heck of a fun time and I'm glad I got to share it with my dad. His elk was also the biggest he had ever taken in his 40+ years of hunting. 2013 turned out to be one for the books for me and pops.

Great buck. Congrats to both you and your dad. That's the best part of the story. I'd say that buck is right around 180. Nice picture and good country, too. Well done and thanks for the post.

wow ! what a great first deer congrads .id bet he will touch 180 or a bit better !

Who cares what the score is, that buck is awesome! One of these days I hope to get one like that.

I'm not one for telling my grandson how big of turd I had to pinch off from having to eat so much meat. I want to give him the trophies that hang from my wall and tell him the unforgettable experience that came with each and every one.

I also think he'll break the 180" mark with ease BUT I agree with many other posters; WHO CARES WHAT HE SCORES?
It's a fine trophy buck and one that might be hard for you to ever better!
Revel in the moment and cherish the memories of a great time with your dad. It will all change one of these days. Nothing stays the same.
Congratulation on a fine trophy buck!
Zeke

Looks like a 185-187 buck to me. Stud buck for sure, its an awesome accomplishment in itself to kill a 35 inch buck!! To everybody that says score doesn't matter, I say each to their own! I personally have OCD when it comes to counting inches if only for my own personal knowledge.

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

With that mainframe spread, 32", i'll up my score guess to 180+

Apparently, the the guy that was nice enough to post up pic's and a nice hunt report asks for a guess on what the buck might score, HE cares what it scores!

Some of you "who cares" guys need to remember that this site is about Monster Muleys and like it or not, scores not always being all important, they do often get tossed around.

Joey,
The reason I always say "who cares" is because way too many guys let the damn tape tell them if they had a good hunt or not.

I know he asked for guesses. That's why I guessed!

He'd better hope he's not disappointed if it doesn't "measure" up to expectations!

Great buck regardless of score.

Zeke

Zeke, he more than measures up to my expectations. Our hunt was winding down by Monday, and I was planning on shooting any buck that came my way that afternoon. He far surpasses "any buck", so I'm pleased beyond measure with my buck. But, as many have said, just getting into the mountains with my dad is all that's necessary for a great hunt, the success of the hunt wasn't contingent upon the harvest.

Zeke, i agree with you, a bucks score has little to do with a successful hunt... but i still wonder why some have to post "Who cares" when a guy asks for a guess when obviously some do.

My best muley bucks are all in the 160-180 range, no super monsters, then there are the dozens of good to better Blacktails taken with none of them making book. I'd still claim to have done fairly well through the years and can't remember ever being truly disappointed, even if i came home empty.

Good for you!

If you had no preconceived notions then, this, or any buck would do just fine. The fact that he's a trophy buck is just icing on the cake.

My little point was: SOME guys would be disappointed if a trophy didn't "measure" up. MOST guys would be better off to leave the tape to the carpenters and just enjoy the trophy buck as it is.

As usual, only 1 guys opinion,
Zeke

Sage,

Maybe some say "who cares" because they themselves would not have to think twice about taking that buck and they personally wouldn't care what it scored. (I'm only guessing since I can only speak for myself)

The OP asked for guesses and we both obliged, as did many others.... and I added my opinion, as usual.

Like I've said before, our "history" is not too different and our experiences are very similar. It all just happened in a different part of the US.

Best,
Zeke

It's all good, i just picked today to bring up a pet peeve that has been stewing.

Anyway, 32" mainframe!! Truly an exceptional buck, one to be very proud of, Congrats again!!

Sorry to reopen an old thread, but my deer seen above has made it to the final 8 in the "Deer of the Year" competition being put on by Outdoor Life. I understand its a whitetail magazine, for the most part, but figured I'd give 'er hell anyway in trying to win a couple trail cams. If you guys could throw a vote my way, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Congrats on the contest. Good luck.
Did you ever get it scored?
I would guess somewhere in the 180's.

I never have had him officially scored, but by my own calculations, he's about 176 net, after the 6 1/2" in deductions for his cheaters. He's a hell of a buck that just doesn't quite have a corresponding b&c score.
