Hypothetical - Could you get it done?

If you had in your hand the Colorado Gov. Tag and from now to the end of the month to hunt, do you think you could turn up and kill a 200 inch buck without having to pay for a guide, paying finders fee, etc. Just getting out there searching on your own for the next two weeks.

Could you do it?

No Doubt I belive I could, or I would try like hell too. If I had the tag I wouldnt be interested in paying anyone to help me, thats not saying I wouldnt accept help from people that we'er offering it up to me. But I feel I could do just fine on my own. Might not be the biggest in the state but I would be happy with it.

Yup, sure could turn up a 200", I have seen several bucks that would break that and more recently. I just wish I would have a tag.

Yes. Just get out of Gunnison and Eagle. Hard to believe but there are more units in the state than 2 winter ranges barely recovering from a bad winter.

Don't know that I woulda Waited till the Last 2 Weeks of Season/Year?

Unless a Guy had too,I'd Hunt to the End no matter what!

Here's what I've seen where I Hunt:

The Few Good Bucks that are left around here after/Post Rut become very hard to locate!

I think for the Most Part they are Wore Down & just don't move around much!

Problem around here is there are so Few of them Left,it Ain't like Hunting Colorado,so maybe if I could Hunt Unit 44 from now till the end of the year things wouldn't be so Bad!:D

No Doubt,if you can Locate Him Post-Rut there Ain't gonna be nothing to Killing Him!

I won't lie. It would take a reasonable amount of luck for me to pull that off. I would probably start by trying to ask people for some intel at least on what areas to focus on. I am pretty reasonable at glassing up and finding good deer in an area and I am fairly skilled at field judging deer. But there is an lot of country in a whole state and I would probably need a reference point to start at.

Don't know, it is hunting after all. With that said it wouldn't be to a lack of effort. I'd be using up some serious vacation and be out there hitting it hard. I know of a couple spots where it would be better than average odds of finding one. If it didn't happen, i'd be bummed and kicking my self in the azz :)

"Hunting is where you prove yourself"

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

I'm with Bess. If I had that tag, I'd have started making contact and doing homework early. But I would definitely do it on my own and would try to kill a buck 200 or better. But I would not wait till now to start, either.

Those bucks are not abundant, but with time and effort, I'd say a person could find a big old stud.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-16-13 AT 12:39PM (MST)[p]If I had hunted Colorado before or if it was on my radar and I already had a couple of starting points than maybe I could get lucky. If I had the tag in hand right now...no way unless I got the right help. The problem as I see it is the only way to do it w/ just 2 weeks left is to get help in finding a 200 class deer. That is also the problem...you need quality info from the right people (who know what they are looking at) and I'd think you'd wind up chasing deer that don't exist for two weeks and get frustrated.

I'd like to think I could get it done.

But, like others have said, It's hunting and it's too easy to chase a shadow if you get stuck with bad intel this late in the game.

The problem for me would be the urge to jump around from area to area without giving any one area the best of my efforts.

I'd be better off to pick 2 areas only and hunt a week in one and a week in the other and shoot the best buck I found.

Let the chips fall where they will.

Now, if I could just win the powerball.....
Zeke

I would place the odds in my favor. I could not nor do I believe anyone can say 100% that they would get it done. I do know that the next 2 weeks would be extreme with myself checking out everything I could.

I do know where there are deer pushing the mark right now. On the flip side there is no guarantee you could get it done.

I would just hunt my butt off and have fun looking at deer that I would never get to hunt otherwise.

I know 200 is bench mark, but I already have seen some incredible bucks this year that I would love to have on my wall that are only in the 180s. One was a massive three with rear forks only and front tines that arched that of big bull. He was around 34 wide and almost as tall.... So no matter what I am certain I would find a buck of a lifetime regardless of score.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-16-13 AT 11:17AM (MST)[p]I have a hunted in just 4 units in Colorado in the last 5 years for elk/deer. The units we have hunted are not popular units either. I can tell you that if you hunt it hard and get after it (ESPECIALLY THIS TIME OF YEAR!!) you can get it done in CO. It takes considerable time behind the glass and true patience to turn up those big boys, but spend the time and I'm confident a guy can get it done. I am confident I could with the buddies I hunt with and no, none of us live in CO. Public land, 100% DIY.

Founder - could you? You have smoked some nice CO bucks in the past, you know CO well enough to weigh in here. Thoughts?

Blake who?
It must be an inside joke and probably not funny if you have to explain the punch-line to me.
Sorry,
Zeke

Nothing said about trespass fees so I would head to the eastern plains where I would glass, and glass and drive and glass some more..eventually a 200 incher would be found. The hard part for me would be killing it with my bow. I am a piss poor gun hunter!

I don't know. Would sure like to try but at this point, i'd rather have the help along for several reasons. I'd probably hold off until finding a big framed typical and he wouldn't necessarily have to score anywhere near 200" to float my boat.

Remember this: some of us KNOW you!

By the way; I'm going with dikndirt. That guys know a thing or two! I'll swing by and pick you up! haha

Sure would be fun.
Zeke

Yes-
But would I feel the same satisfaction if I had done it during regular seasons with more effort and skill needed. NO

Based on my Colorado experience and knowledge, I would say I'd probably eat tag soup on New Year's Day. That's my honest, well thought out opinion.

If I knew where a 200 incher was right now, obviously I might feel a bit more cocky, but I don't so I'd first have to go over there and find one, then get him.

I've spent time in great units, and during the rut, and in December, and the number of 200 inchers I've found are quite few, so while I'd like to kick back here in my comfy chair and "think" I could turn one up, reality is, I probably wouldn't find and kill one.

But odds would sure be good enough that I'd have fun trying and give it hell everyday.

There'd Sure be some Fun Trying to Find Him!

JUDAS!

Just seeing some Decent Bucks would be a Kick!

Un-Like the Over Hunted PISSCUTTERS here in NE TARDville!

I know there are Guys from Colorado that could make us all Sick by showing/knowing where some Dandy Bucks are!

But would it be Huntin to have somebody show you the Buck, then say there He is,Shoot Him?

Let's set the Standard a little Higher at 240"!:D

We're Talkin Colorado for GAWDS Sakes!

Where 180"ers are considered Dinks!:D

I know Colorado is a different Story with way more Bucks!

But it's always amazed me how after the Rut the Big Boys here(What Damn Few there are!)just kinda up & disappear!

Even when there's Snow on the Ground!

I want to change my hypothetical answer to maybe, probably not. All day at work I've been thinking about this. Even though I know where some big boys are hanging out, it would be assanine to assume with two weeks left that I could find and tag one of them. If I had all season I'm pretty sure I could get it done, but this late is pushing it. It's easy to sit on the computer and say "hell yeah!" but in reality I would probably see some 180 type bucks and not lay eyes on a 200, even though I would be hunting an area where I know they live.
Thank goodness I'll probably never have the tag so I won't have to worry!

not to sure bout 200 but 190 or so no prob .200 is a magical # and very hard to find a true 200inch deer !!

I've never been to CO before but I do get to hunt province wide for 3 months a year which isn't much different than this Gov Tag you boys have been talking about. I hunt the rut every year and one thing I do know, true GIANTS are extremely rare. During the last 2 seasons I have indeed been hunting one of those once in a lifetime 245 inchers and I've had my Ass handed to me two years in a row. I have been at this game for a very long time and can honestly say that sitting behind a keyboard saying you can do it versus going out there and getting it done are two completely different things.

Well.......let's see if some of our Colorado photographer friends would be willing to post up any 200" 'ers that have shown up since the hunts ended this year. Absent their location, of course.

Are we talking a 200 net typical or just anything that sci's over 200 gross non typ?? Regular rifle?

200 typ is a tough deal (net)tough to find one let alone find and kill him. I would hate to wager my house on it. But 200" gross, yes and in two days not two weeks. Make it over 225 like Bess wants to and I don't know, it's a huge leap for the extra 2 ft of antler.

The toughest 3 weeks are coming up though, and the switch can get turned off in an instant. This year is shaping up 2-3 weeks early so I still say yes, a 190+ net typ would be tougher than a 200NT, probably harder than a 225 NT.

BC boy did you catch a glimpse yet? They don't call it once in a lifetime for nothing!

I Know there was some Damn tough Huntin this year!

Don't know how it was in Colorado?

Lol zekers!

And Squirrel?

The Tough/Switch you Talk of?

Is it the Post Rut Time that I Speak of?

I'm not sure I could get it done. I'm not even sure if I'd have a wife or a home when the hunt ended. I'd love to have the opportunity to find out.

I do only because I killed a 198 4 by 4 with a couple extras this year and seen 2 typicals bigger than my buck

Squirrel,
Not once. 2 years of combing. No hint other than one set of sheds. Did get a little side tracked on a giant typical the last 2 weeks of Nov but he was in a very logical spot for the NT to show up in as well.

Bess I'm talking about the post-rut, floats as far as the timing but the serious bucks (180+) just "go flat" out of total exhaustion, re-emerging about mid Jan in bachelor groups and in full "survival mode" i.e. dumb as a stump, not technically dumb they just have a higher priority, they watch you but don't run unless you get right on top of them. Keep in mind that back in the hay-day of deer they hunted thru late Jan. Explains a lot when you watch what really happens and read those old tales. What isn't said is as important as what is, read the Co biggest bucks and bulls... READ it don't just drool over the pics!!

Bessy,
When they have an intense rut like what I saw this year, the big boys hide for several weeks to rest and heal up.

BCBOY & Squirrel!

You need to Refer to my First Post # 4!

A lot of people think:

It's December!

We've got Snow on the Ground!

Blah,Blah,Blah!

It Ain't that Easy!

Back in the Day of Huntin Lions Hard I seen many a Decent Bucks Lose their Live's during the Post Rut!

Lots of Hunters will Argue but during that time there are way more Bucks killed by Lions than Does, just way easier for them, the WEAK ole Bucks just don't stand a Chance!

Not saying it Can't or Won't be done but these last 2 Weeks surely wouldn't be my Top Pick!

In My opinion I'd say it would be one of the Toughest times to locate(Not Kill!)the Big Bucks!

One thing that'd Help would be Hunting in Colorado where there is a better chance rather than Hunting around here in an area that is in BIG TROUBLE when it comes to Deer Numbers/Big Bucks!

The Locals here now see a 20" PISSCUTTER Now & they BRAGG they've seen a Big Buck,SAD!

Just think BCBOY:

If you were only Stupid one time a year you'd be Layed out & Worthless & MIA for a few weeks too!:D

With no family or work commitments, I'd say 25% Chance of me getting it done. If I could bring my entourage with me (close family and friends) then that goes to over 50% chance. I think Founder is selling himself short here, I bet it would be 50/50 and would get it done!

I think I could kill a great deer but 200 inches?? So many of us on here think they are around every corner in Colorado.

I do find it interesting that there have been a few people who have responded to your question claim to have a few pics of deer they have seen this year yet none have been posted??

That's because the people on here are uhhhh, never mind! I'll make ya a deal swag. You post your well thought out, well spelled, analysis on the winter range harassment thread for a-h, and I'll throw you 3 bones, you can make up your own mind on score, I have my ideas and quite frankly don't really care what anybody on here thinks, the usual MM stuff of "there aint no way that g-3 is 10-1/2" I can spot a 9-7/8" g-3 cause my daddy told me how..." blah blah blah same old ##### from people that don't know a brow tine from a frozen dog turd. Sorry for the 'tude but Princess is watching "the voice" and I had one extra cold one to weather the storm.

Sorry Swag, I was conducting an experiment last night. APPARENTLY you cannot drink enough to make Christina smarter... but you CAN drink enough to take yourself down to her level... whodathunkit???

But for being a good sport (while I was being a peckerhead) here are your bones. Plus I saw you posted up a nice pic of a very big buck on the other thread!

Don't ever question squirrel's ability to find big bucks towards the end of December in Colorado. Everyone could use "some special help from Kevin!"

I wouldn't care if it made 200" or not... If it was what I wanted, I'd shoot it. Also, it'd be a buck I could shoot from the road, or at least where my 3-year-old could be by my side. That'd be a real trophy.

Being a colorado resident for the last 13 years, I would have to say NO .I could not get it done on PUBLIC land !. I could not get it done without help of some sort, either from a rancher, outfitter,or someone. I would try like hell but I am being realistic and strictly sticking to founders question.

I definitely think it could be done, but it would not be easy!! A 200" deer is special and getting lucky enough to find one, and then harvest it in the next two weeks would be a chore and take a lot of luck. I think I could find some huge bucks, but a 200" deer is not just around every corner. If I were going to give it my best go I would definitely hunt east of I-25. Probably wouldn't happen for me. I took a picture of a really nice buck this morning I'll post up, but he is definitely not 200 class.

That's funny stuff there Gator, Watch your alliances though they get their tar and feathers in bulk on here and after they get me they may grab the Gator! You'd be surprised how much tar a squirrel tail can soak up though...

Old Cooak (short "o" silent "a") pulls that link out like he is Arthur pulling Excalibur out of the stone, never realizing that while he is polishing it ol' Gwen was polishing something else back at the castle.

I'm thinking about attaching it as my signature and saving him a bunch of time/aggravation. I think it is a Mossback video, I think he must be hawking pirated video on the sly.

You get a tag and give me a shout, I do OK finding them the other 11-1/2 mos. of the year too, contrary to what you'll read on here! If you sweat you'll do fine, even on a 2nd choice.

Think I'm gonna Re-NIGG on what I said earlier!:D

If I could Hunt the Private Ground in Colorado I believe I might be able to GIT-R-DONE!

Now that's a BIG If Ain't it?

If we knew for sure we could, then it wouldn't be hunting, would it? That is what keeps us coming back year after year: the challenge of "maybe"
