Has anyone ever hunted this area. Was thinking of checking this area out on a third season rifle hunt. Any info would be appreciated.

It's a tough hunt. When I did it two years ago the weather hadn't got the deer moving yet. Beautiful country and fun to glass, just not a whole lot of deer unless you hit it right. Good luck.

What season did you hunt? Usually I hunt north east of mancos and have had some luck there. Have you hunted other areas in 72/73?

its a tough hunt no matter the season honestly you could go days behind the glass with out seeing much or stumble across a giant .to me it would depend on what kinda hunting you like.if you like to glass for hrs great area

I hunted 3rd. 3 of us had tags and hunted hard all over the unit. Turned up some great looking 160-170 class deer that were young with potential, but none of the giants that grow around there. There is definitely a chance to stumble on one. Bottom line I guess is.... If you're not there, you're not gonna be able to stumble on one. Just don't expect to see much. I'll probably do the hunt again someday. I'd love to hear if you do well.

We will be there for fourth season for my son's deer tag. I do want to check out the Canyon of the Ancients and other BLM in 72 for at least a day or two despite reported low deer density. If anyone has any advice, please shoot me a PM, much appreciated!
thanks

So how did it go. I'll be hunting 3rd season this year in Canyon of the Ancients.

I wrote it up somewhere else around here, but fourth season was just too late for that area, that year. Third should be better I would guess.
