LAST EDITED ON Sep-03-03 AT 03:15PM (MST)[p]elk hunting hipothetical situation,
you hunting public land,(national forrest,
bow season has been on for two weels and your heading out
muzzy season.
you hunted the area last year and ran into lots/ herds of elk down low,
on privet land, this year the conditions are just about the same,
no rain, food groth is minimal, do you think teh elk will be high.
oh ya for got to mention there is a rancher who has about 300 acres in hay. and water , with 3 sides of his place in timber and one or 2 sections that from the areial photos apear to be old grouth and on north slopes.
with in 2 miles as the crow flies or straight down the hog backs as teh elk would run.
Now you hunting budy does think there will be any thing there.
if you had the chance to hunt this would you.
the cows neew food/ and water, and there is no one bothering them because it privet land and there is no hunting on it.
now the bulls are going in to rut,
do you think the bulls are going to chase the cows up high to get a peice?
or do you think the bulls will go to where the cows are, if they haven't been there all summer already?
let you know i got premission to hunt this property with my group.
one guy thiks it is a wast of time just because he heard from a nother guy it better on the other side of the fience,
and wants to go check it out, mind you we don't have all week to run all over, I'm for planting my ass in a spot and waitinig. am I wrong? set up a herd of decoys and cow call. morning and evenings,

Best advise any where you go, is to do some scouting in advance. Every area and every state can be very different year to year. Elk feel pressure and sense feed conditions, but are not smart decide to cross a fence or not. Remember they are animals with animal instincts. You are still dominant. Hope this helps you. I have dealt with hunting partners in the same fashion. Follow your instinct, because you are on a hunt which really is for fun, with the hopes of the big one. Good luck.

If you hunt like you spell and compose sentences....I think the elk are pretty safe. What in the hell were you asking?

JIM: 2 miles isn't far to a elk coming or going to food or water. I would set one day aside to hunt that area.I think you will find that little extra distance from the field will have elk using that area for bedding and breeding. GOOD LUCK and Don't worry about the english teacher.

Elk can cover 10 miles in one day easy if being pressured.
First off, even last year in the 'height' of the drought (we hope) there were plenty of elk up high on public land.
This year though is a little different, the grass is greener, thicker and higher. There is more water up there than last year and there is elk up there as well.
If the private land runs right along with where you normally hunt then there will probably be elk there as well. I don't know go scout it out and see for your self. If you guys don't hit any elk there in the first day or two, go somewhere else. It's not rocket science.

Well if you have mastered elk like your knick name, then you don't need to be asking hypothetical questions on the internet. Just put up a whole herd of elk decoys and wait for them to come to you.

can somebody please tell me where i can buy a whole herd of elk decoys???

ive never thought of this before!!

i want about 50 c0ws and one little bull, this ott to werk!

i'm no elkmaster!!!

the only bocat driving a semi just to haul my hunting gear!!

Well if you really want to know where to get a WHOLE herd ask Elkmaster 101 he makes them. Maybe you haven't seen his decoys or his picture of his herd setup, some people might think your a fool so don't Open your mouth and remove all doubt, You have a nice day.

Thank,
Its a shame some people have to hide behind critisum.
let alone hide behind masked idenities,
when all your looking for is a little advise.
Gator, have a good hunt and thanks.
when i get back from elk hunting, the week of the 22nd, i'll put up another elk on ebay.

hey elkmaster,we have a lot of cows doing the same thing up here in b.c and if the bulls wanna get some they go to the well, after all the girls DO have the hammer!i saw three big bulls in a hayfield when i punched my cow draw tag last fall.good luck!joe

If the cows are coming to the Hay, the bulls will come down to get em'... Not quite sure what you're asking??? But I have hunted a similar sounding situation. The Bulls will probably be out in the middle of the hay field bugling up a storm during the night. And out w/ enough time for you to try and figure out a spot to ambush em'... That's how I've killed a few anyway. Just get in on em', w/ the wind in your favor, and try to make it happen!

Hunt them where they are, not where you want them to be, dont wait on elk you might be waiting along time. Gary
