Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

What do you guys think about having a few high country "wilderness" early season rifle hunts.(Sept.1 through Sept.5)
This could open up more opportunity and help redirect people out of the regular draw.
It seems to be a popular hunt in Colorado.

I think a high country hunt should only be available in some of the wilderness areas.
Here's a map of what we have in Utah.
http://www.wilderness.net/map.cfm?xm...x=4496938.7971

Of the ones listed, I think only a few would or should qualify.
Here's the one I think could work.
Mount Naomi
Wellsville
Deseret Peak
Lone Peak
Timpanogos
High Uintas
Nebo
Pine Valley

Some may only have 2-10 tags and the Uintas could serve more.
With the new Mule Deer committee starting up, I hope they brainstorm some of these ideas of having a few late and early season hunts.

There's always next year

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

This is a great idea. I would like to see something like this.

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

Why only a 5 day hunt ...why not 7 day????????

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

7 days would be fine. what do you think of the idea?

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

I like the idea. The more options for people the better. Spread out the apps. I think it would be good because it adds some quality opportunities on some of the general units. Like was said though if they keep the tag numbers low for these types of hunts I think it would be a great idea.

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

Already seen it!

It ran for like one year & they Banned the Idea/Hunt!

Once again!

As bad as Hunting seemed to have been at the time it surely beats now!

Some of the Same Places that always Held a Buck or two don't even have a Track in them now!

As far as Relieving Hunting Pressure,I don't think it'd Help much!

But always like the High Country Hunts!

CAT. if ya go with those dates you are kicking a bunch of bowhunters off the hill, especially with 2lump's fiasco of pick a unit, for 15 or 20 guys with guns.

Some of you must be kids, either that or you have short memories,
Remember the early high country hunts Utah used to have? and why did they only last for year or two?
my nephew had a mount Naomi tag

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

The early high country buck hunts were before my time, what were the issues?

Personally, I like the idea of having some limited entry hunts where the "quality" component of the hunt is derived from season dates and a very limited number of permits. This way DWR provide some quality hunts without having to manage an entire unit for a really high buck to doe ratio.

For example- on units that are meeting buck to doe ratio objectives maybe you set aside maybe 1%-2% of the permits for limited entry hunts. On units with high country wilderness, you run the hunts mid-september during the same season dates at the limited entry bull elk rifle hunt, that way you don't affect any archery hunters. Or, maybe you have a muzzleloader hunt that overlaps the muzz spike elk hunt that runs about the first week of November. Limit these to 1%-2% of the total tags for the unit and let people apply for these as limited entry hunts. 1%-2% isn't a whole lot, but when you factor it for a unit that offers 2000 permits it adds up. This would creates a bunch of new quality hunting opportunties which is cool in and of it self and should also help draw odds for other limited entry units as people currently applying for those hunts might switch over.

CO, WY, ID, NV, AZ, NM all do something like this. There are units in all those states that are easier to draw or even general season for some seasons, but there are also early or late hunts with limited permits that are hard to draw and produce trophy bucks.

There is no such thing as a sure thing in trophy mule deer hunting.

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

You Ain't that Young DAX!:D

Don't remember the Exact year? It's been a while!

Don't hold me to exact numbers!

They had Approx 25 High Country Buck Tags on the Uintas!

This was just before everything became 120% Computerized!

You had to go to the Division & get the Leftover Tag List!

The Leftovers were on a 1st come,1st Serve through a Mail In Application only!

Approx 23 of the 25 Tags were left over!

The DWR ####ed one of us out of a Tag & Yes I do have the Proof!

Had some Good times that year & seen some decent Bucks!

No Record Book/Or NOMADS but some Decent Hunting and not another GAWD-DAMNED Hunter in Site Nowhere!

Un-Like the PUMPKIN Patch Adventures I've been participating since!

And ww!

If that's all it would take(20-25 Hunters!) to boot 10 Million StickFlippers of the Hill I say let's GIT-R-DONE!:D:D:D

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

They use to have them back in the day but for some reason got rid of them.

I believe it was because they all are with in General units and the quality really wasn't overwhelming.

Bringing them back certainly wouldn't hurt...

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

I think I could support something like this if they were muzzy hunts, not rifle. I'd like the early one to be rifle, but due to it coinsiding with the already established archery hunt, I don't think it's safe.

I remember as a kid when we would go muzzy hunting in the snow, in November. Best hunts I ever went on with family maybe. That'd be a cool hunt to bring back. And it makes sense to hunt in the rut, but keep it competitive, make t a muzzy hunt.

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

I think we should also consider a late season very limited hunt in some units...like Idaho.
Take just a few tags out of each units general season, and offer a late season draw on those units. Maybe 2-3 tags per unit.
This would also get more people through the le pool.

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

A Late Muzz Hunt with todays SmokePoles would just do more Harm to Our already Suffering Herds!

Won't Argue it'd be a Fun Hunt!

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

high country buck hunt unitas . was great hunt i belive the year was 1991 .me and 2 of my freinds . had this tag saw lots of deer we all missed big bucks .saw at least 20 bucks a day of corse.this is when deer.population was booming .we killed all 4 points. 29 1/2 ,27 1/2 ,26 inchers. i have ben in same area were got these deer.almost every year.last 5 years. might only see 1 or 2 bucks. very little. deer 2 points .all that is left but old saying goes they are big 2 points .but still 2 point.genetics gone. why.

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

Im not a fan of it. I mostly archery hunt, but still love the rifle hunts too. Dont screw with the LE archery elk hunts any more than we already do. This would be slaughter on the big bucks in the open. Lets wait a few more years and bring back the good old day, when that happens, I will listen. Maybe do it in October, but not sept. Just my thoughts.

I'm with this guy. I feel like we are just now starting to see some of the units increase in deer quality and number. Why mess with them? Let's give a good couple years and talk about it. Get all or at least most of the unit back on track before we start purposing these type of hunts. Let some of these bucks start dying of old age then we can figure out how to have some of these hunts. My vote would be more of a late season archery hunt and treat it as a LE hunt.
Just my .02 cents.

RE: Utah early season wilderness, high country hunts

HA HA nice try CAT.... You knew what LE Elk hunt I meant, and it ain't got squat to do with Lamanite sticks.

Put it at the same time as the LE rifle hunt and I'm all for it!

Don't like the idea of it running the same time as the archery hunts...
