Hey everyone. So I didn't draw my LE Deer tag in the Book Cliffs. So, I got my 1st choice general season tag. I will be huntin Boulder/Kaiparowits with my dad in the Muzzy hunt.

I have hunted Boulder with a bow during 4 different archery hunts spanning from 2007 to 2010. Since then I've been on other family members' LE hunts and this is my first hunt for my own deer since 2010. I'm not a trophy hunter in general season, but I won't shoot anything smaller than a decent 3 point. I have a "no more dinks" rule.

While I am rather familiar with Boulder Mtn on the Highway 12 side, I am curious if anyone would share some info on the west side of the mountain. My dad and I are interested in hunting on this side of the mountain as it would be new to us. We've never been there. We are hoping to get down there over the 24th of July and check it out. We'd even be willing to explore all the way to the border if its possible or worth it. We are kinda like the bear that went over the mountain... :)

Additionally, if there is someone who has hunted this exact hunt in the last couple years, I'd love to get a PM from you and maybe get some direction.

Thanks guys. And good luck to all of you in your adventures this fall.

Hey BrowningRage I am sorry I can't help you out on your general season tag. My question is how many points did you have putting in for the bookcliffs? I for shore thought I would have drawn out with 11 points this year.

I had 10 points for the Books. I thought with the split that guys with 10 or more points would jump ship to other units, guess I was wrong. I can't believe that 11 points didn't get you a tag..!! I guess a lot of guys decided the south end was worth it. Frankly, I don't know if I'll be putting in out there anymore. I've waited this long, I might as well start putting in for a better unit. :(

My only consolation will be if they only allotted like 30 tags for the south end. But we'll see...

Thanks for your advise. I have lived my life in the Books. I would rather hunt the books north than anything, but learned the south out scouting the high country for my late Grandpas elk hunt. Will never quit putting in for the books. My family has hunted there for 52 years. I was there in 2012 with my cousins tsg which he drew with 3 points. Its not about the big buck you shoot its the camping we spent, and the time we spent together. Legacy he has put together makes are family come together. He, and a lot of are family have shot great Bucks, but I guaren't we would rather be in the Books than any place in the world.

I've been muzz hunting this mountain approximately every other year since 2000. Last year I went with a friend on the rifle. Sounds like you didn't crack the code with archery. There are good deer there, but I still haven't cracked the code with muzz. I drive through three units that are every bit as good to get to Boulder. I guess I keep going back for the fishing. I'll be glad to swap info if you send me a pm.

There are some big deer on that mountain but finding them is very tough. I see a lot more deer on the 12 side.

Thanks for the responses guys. I think no matter what it will be a beautiful time to be on Boulder and any decent buck we may happen to harvest will be a huge bonus. I can't even imagine if I was able to take a deer with my 4 and 2 year olds with me, or heck, having my wife with me even...

I appreciate any and all help. Thanks Smellybuck for the PM. I'll hit you back when I get a minute.

browning the not so funny thing is with ten points and point creep you wont be hunting a better unit anytime soon. It could be another couple of decades before you are guaranteed a tag on a better unit depending on the unit.
