Remember mule deer hunters that next years throphy buck is only around 165-70 class buck opening day. The main thing that builds a throphy is maturity ( yes nutrition, weather, genes ect. ), but the most important is maturity without it you wont see a throphy deer. I have seen several big bucks come from severe drought areas, but not herds with a low percentage of mature bucks. If that helps tell you how important maturity is. If you hunt for the meat only.. For how much it costs to get into the high country you could buy all the meat you need until next season ( think of ALL your expenses.) Your choice of shooting a younger age buck with potential only limits the chances of your area producing a throphy for yourself to harvest. Overcome the thrill of the kill and you will have this mastered. I'm not a member here nor do I have the time to get on here and shoot the the BS all the time, but every once in a while I'll get on to see where the bucks are coming from. Not that i will go hunt them I just like to know what states the big ones are coming from then figuring out why those big bucks are coming from there. And most of the time it is a limited entry tag where the bucks get a little more age on them. I'm just trying to spread the word of sound conservation and help you get your throphy buck. So what are your goals in antler size this year?

***********And one last reminder for the gun hunters that do not bowhunt and have scouted thier buck.***********

About now most of you gun hunters have spotted the buck you are wanting to go after opening day, but now that bowhunters ( no offense I'm one also ) have been out. Those mature bucks are going to change thier feeding times and usual patterns. I have seen this repeated several years in a row. You guys might want to try locating them towards the end of bow season and find out the new patterns and locations they are hiding out. Or else you just might not see your buck. How many times have you heard over and over, " i saw him all the way up to season and didnt see him again."

Good bye and happy hunting! Hope you do your part.

Maybe the intent is to encourage the harvesting of bucks with "atrophy", since they tend to be "atrocious". }>

has anyone in here actually atrophy on any deer or elk? my taxidermist did work on a coues where his right front shoulder had been shot and through out the year never used it so it shrunk and his nail or hoof whatevr u wanan call it had grown to about 6 inches, it was a decnet buck also, about 75-80 inches
