Was thinking of picking up a leftover muzzle loader tag for this unit. I live out of state. What kind of things could I expect good or bad on this hunt? Was thinking muleys but would consider coues as well.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-14 AT 02:52PM (MST)[p]Large unit. Lots of diversity;Upper Sonaran desert up to dense mixed conifer stands. I had a late archery Coues deer tag in this unit a few years back. Couldn't get an arrow into one of several Coues bucks we saw, but also came across some great mule deer bucks. Lots of public land, good deer numbers, lots of topography. Plenty of room to spread out and get away from the masses of road hunters. I grew up in the adjacent unit, so I know this one well.

There are plenty of deer if you know where to look during the bow hunt, muzzle loader is harder, and rifle is really hard. It will take a while to learn it though. Question is where are you coming from? If from back east go for it. If you live in a western state stay in your home state. Unit 23, or any NM unit for that matter will likely be a disappointment compared to what you have at home. I would personally pick up a AZ bow tag over this muzzy tag if that is an option for you. PM me and I can give you some general ideas of where to look.

I'll be watching this thread as well. I live in east NM and am considering this unit for a leftover archery tag.
