Expensive mistake

So I get the mail yesterday and there is a deer tag for CO. Good right?? No Terrible.

I have 12 points for deer in CO and my wife by a screw up put me in for a tag that takes 4 points instead of a bonus point like I told her.

She has spoke to 3 different people at CO G&F and the only way to get my points back is to turn in the tag, but, pay the $360 for is.

I could hunt the tag, but, was saving those points for a hunt when I had more time.

I have resolved myself to pony up the $, but, I think that is kinda steep. I could see paying $100 to CO for the hassle, but, $360. Ouch

Hey PAUL!

Install one more Allison!:D

Or make Ms Paul pay it!:D

Don't forget you also won't get a point for this year. Just something else to help cheer you up.

I would turn it in and lose the $360. Burning 8 more points than needed would really bother me especially if I did the hunt and it wasn't good.

Are you serious? WAFJ

bummer

Yep, if you went into the draw with 12 points and turn your tag back in (and pay the $361) you will come out of it with 12 points, not 13.

Look at the bright side, you don't "owe" the money, you just don't get a refund :)

be happy that Colorado allows you to retain your points. I made a mistake on my application in Arizona, it cost me 8pts, $650, and cost someone else a tag that they may have wanted. The $650 I can handle more than losing the points.

I screwed up my wife's Oregon application one year.
Put in for the spike elk tag instead of the branch antlered bull season. What a waste of points. I could do nothing to reestablish her points but at least I didn't have to buy the tag.
Mistakes happen to everyone.

You also have had the opportunity to hose one hunter out of a tag as the state will not reissue your returned tag so your contribution will allow one more buck to age another year, not necessarily a bad thing. We do appreciate your finacial contibution. :)

I would go on the hunt. There is not a unit now worth 12 pts or more for that matter. I guess you could bank on the deer herd/population coming back but given the recent management history I would just go hunt!

That really sucks though and I would kinda feel cheated. What did you end up drawing?? Just my thoughts.

Good luck whatever you do.

If you consider the fact that LO tags in 2-4 point units are selling for 2k or more I'd say your 12 points are worth far more than $360. It's a no brainer, turn in the tag!

It is a good tag, but, right in the middle of my son's basketball season.
We hunted it the last 2 years and took good bucks. gonna wait a couple years when I got more time to really focus on an out of state hunt.

It is the Californians that migrated to CO that come up with stuff like that.

And no it is not the first time my wife has screwed up or points. Probably not the last.

Yep, I could do it, but, she needs to do something.

I would let my wife make the hotel reservations for the trip, but NEVER actually apply for my points/hunts.

I'd just pay the money and call it a mistake. At least you have that option.

I would make your wife get a job! If she can't apply right then she can at least earn a few bucks.

Maybe that's how I could Draw an LE TAG with 18 Points!

Have NVB do my application!:D

Jack, 80% chance I am turning it in, but, I will take you up on your offer for sure.

We will hit the Mexican food place if it works out.

Please check this with the fish and game, but I believe you have two choices. I have turned tags back in the past and this is my recollection.

1. If you turn the tag back in and ask for a refund, you will get your refund, keep your points but NOT get a preference point for this year. (So long as you turn it back in before the start of the season)
2. If you turn the tag back in and don't ask for a refund, you will get your preference point as well.

If I am correct, the decision just got a lot harder!

Good Luck

Verified today that I will not get my point from this year even though they get the $ for the tag.

txhunter58, that is about the only upside to this whole thing.

1. You get your points restored to pre-draw level if you waive the refund of a first choice tag.

2. You lose your points if you get a refund of a first choice tag.

Form is here:

http://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/Shop/AppsLicenses/LicenseRefundApplication.pdf

I'd probably go for a refund with that many points. But if you have time, you could maybe go a bit ahead of the season to scout and mail the tag in the day before the season. You might find something worth keeping the tag for. :)

Damn rookies! LOL

There are many thing my wife can do better than me. MY HUNTING APPLICATIIONS IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

I guess it sounds like you have 3 choices. Hey man, at least you have choices.

I'd do the no-refund and get more points if this isn't the year and that isn't the unit.

Good luck,
Zeke

Turn the tag back in and keep your 12 points. You have way too much time and money invested in those 12 points to waste them on a marginal hunt when you don't have the time to spend.

If it makes you feel any better my dad and I had to turn in our unit 76 archery elk tags back in 2011 because my son and I drew too many tags in CO and NM. We lost a point that year and with point creep we have been out of the minimum number to draw for a few years. Now hopefully we will have enough points again next year (12) to draw.

Yep Brian, I dont see any good alternative. For $360 they could give you the stinking point.
The envelope is sitting on my desk to mail in. 99.9% sure it is getting mailed in.

EVILNR, the argument can be made that you lost your man card because you cant make you wife do your apps.... But, I dont feel like pushing that argument. :)

When my wife asked if she could apply for my tags I told her NO! That way if I mess up its my own darn fault. I see where your going with this, as in training her. But I don't see my wife being trained I see her not really applying so she can go out with the girls lol.

Paul, I think the not gaining a point is a good idea in that it helps prevent those from pre scouting and turning a tag back the day before the season cause they can't find a big enough critter. Try again next year at just the tag price penalty makes point creep worse for everyone else.... I know your case is a bit different, but it is your responsibility to ensure your application is right. One point back may cost you a few or more years, but not like starting over. Colorado has a pretty liberal refund policy. No reason needed. I feel the best out there....

Yep, I agree. CO IMO has the best point system out there. At least you can plan your hunts with them a little. You know if you can draw a hunt or not.

Does your investment in the 12 points to eventually hunt a unit you really want to outweigh the cost of turning this tag back in?

If I had screwed up and drawn say, Thousand Oaks here in UT, when I really really wanted to someday hunt the Henry's, I would turn in the tag and keep trying.

IMHO

If you want to hunt a unit that you can draw with 12 points or less then consider turning the tag back in.

If you are chasing a tag that requires 15 points and is experiencing one or more points per year point creep then you need to go ahead and use the tag you drew. You are never going to draw that tag anyway, at least not in the next several years.

That's what u get for letting a women do a mans job!
I think the Dow should put your tag on the leftover list a d if sold thats it u pay 0 and keep your points!
