I have a chance at a 2nd season 54 deer tag. What would I expect from this hunt in terms of number of deer and number of bucks and size of buck I would expect to see? Thanks

IF you have hunted 54 2nd season before and you can invest a lot of scouting time before the opener, you are realistically looking at 170+

IF you haven't hunted 54 2nd season before and you can't scout much before the season, you are looking at 169-, unless you get really lucky

IF you do get the tag and you hunt it, you will see why the buck quality isn't recovering very fast.

You will have a lot of company during 2nd season. My advice would be to get away from the roads. There's a lot of country in that unit that will provide you the opportunity to get away from the crowds, which will also improve your overall experience.

I am no expert on unit 54. This is just my opinion based on the time that I have spent in there the last three years. The local guys may have different advice to offer up.

Good luck with your decision!

Thanks for the reply cobuk. I do plan on getting away from the crowds and finding one of those big, old, heavy bucks. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

You're Most Likely In For A Tough Hunt. But There Are Good Bucks To Be Had Dont Get Me Wrong. It Seems Weve All Been Sittin Around Waiting For Things To Improve And Return To The Glory Days Of Pre 07/08 And It Just Hasn't Unfortunately. Ive Guided A Handful Of Deer Hunts Over The Past Years 4 From Archery To 3Rd Rifle And All Have Been Grinders... I Would Reccomend Focusing Your Efforts On The West End Of The Unit (North Of Blue Mesa) To Soap Creek Where The Numbers Seem To Be Better The Eastern Half. Be Ready To Cover As Much Country As Possible An Glass Until Your Eyes Bleed.
Best Of Luck!

+1 to what COBUK and Coloradoboy said.

I hunted it in 06 and in 2011 and the difference was ASTOUNDING!

Many more deer on the west side IMO too. We saw a ton of good bucks on the east side of it in 06 and saw very little in 2011.

I might add, you should check the CO forum and search the archives. There are surely several threads in there for the last couple years.

Thanks Bill; I have looked back at old posts. I was hoping to hear from those who have hunted it in 2012-2013 to hear how it is going more recently. PM me if you would rather. Thanks. Keep the comments coming.
