Extended Archery

Just got a quick question that maybe someone can answer for me.
I have 2 sons that drew muzzle loader tags this year. With the changes that came this year they can only hunt the Muzzle Loader hunt. Not all three hunts like in years past.

My question is, Can they hunt the extended archery hunts on their muzzle loader tags?

Jeff

I'm pretty sure they need the archery tag for the extended. Call the Dwr office. They can tell you for sure (801) 538-4700 open mon-fri 9-5

No but they can hunt the extended area with their muzzleloader during the muzzleloader season if its in their area/units.

I dont really like the changes the DWR did to the youth tags this year. How are they supposed to keep the kids interested in hunting if all they can do with the Muzzle Tag is one week of hunting. It would be the last choice now. At least if they would have drawn an archery tag they could hunt the extended archery, with a rifle tag they can hunt all three hunts and the extended archery. Why would anyone put down a choice for a muzzle tag on the application now.

I have 4 boys coming up. Oldest is 10. I think they do too much for the youth. If you want your kids to be interested, as a dad or parent, get them involved!!! They dont have to have a tag to love to hunt. Get them in the out doors scouting, fishing, hunting with you with your tags. If they have to have a tag in hand to be involved, then you have failed as a parent or dad. Just my thoughts.
I followed my dad every where he went. He never killed anything (big game) when I was around, but I loved every second of it. If they need more than just that 1 week of the muzzy hunt, then whats the difference with a rifle tag thats just 2 days more? Will that make a difference? I dont think so. Now if they can hunt all 3 hunts and hunt for 3 months because dad wants them to, will that make them love hunting? What happens when they turn 18 and cant be given a silver spoon? Will they still love it? Sorry about the rant, but I hate hearing about "What about the youth?"

As for the OP, you cant hunt the extended with out either the youth rifle tag (so you can hunt all 3, but just archery up there) or just an archery permit.

I am pretty sure it has been this way since they went to the individual units...I have put my boys in for a rifle tag every year for the last 3 years and it has been this way for that long at least. I do Dedicated Hunter so this works well for us and gives us more time to be out enjoying the hunt when they draw.

I believe that change happened last year. If you want to have your kids an oppurtunity to hunt all three then only apply them for the rifle hunts. This change was on the books before the apps were sent in this year. Read the regs and act accordingly. If you pay attention and do things right there is plenty of oppurtunity for the youth. I also believe there is elk tags available still? Upland game, waterfowl. Lots and lots of oppurtunity for a kid to chase wildlife.

Im think the only way a youth can hunt the extended archery hunt is if they have an archery tag. They can hunt all 3 general hunts on a rifle tag, and just muzzy on a muzzy tag.

Well first off, I have 6 sons ranging from 16 to 8 months. They are very involved in everything outdoors. Scouting, Shed hunting, Boy Scouts and anything hunting involved. Its not that they lack opportunity to be outdoors.

Also I read the regulations before applying. I applied for a rifle hunt for my boys and they drew Muzzle tags. They enjoyed the few days of hunting they got but wanted more that's all.

I guess they will get a jump on coyote hunting since they can't be chasing muleys. Good luck hope they get a pickup load of them.

Wait a sec so you are saying you did know that only rifle tags could hunt all three hunts so you only applied for rifle hunts. But instead of drawing rifle tags your boys drew muzzy tags??? Did you contact the DWR about this? You should not have drawn anything that you did not apply for???
