So you get a couple mild winters, deer are doing pretty good around the state, mature buck numbers seem to be going up ever so slightly. So let's take it to the mature bucks that do survive and might breed "cause that's what you want breeding your does" right fish and game? Hopefully your smart enough to know that! Let's make another limited entry hunt on some "general units" ( I didn't think we had any of those) and really take it to the mature bucks. Pull your heads out! It's bad enough you give out a ridiculous amount of tags for a unit that is 80% private, so where is everyone going to hunt? You got it, that 20% slice of public. Not to mention they get slammed from August to December on the extended. Do you not want any big deer? Give them a chance for hell sakes! Why are we trying all sorts of different things to help improve numbers, yet your devising plans to make it easier to shoot mature bucks. I don't get it.

I'm not sure why your so upset about this proposal. The DWR proposal says that only a small number of tags will be available and they are only going to have these hunts on units that are managed for 18-20 bucks per hundred does that are exceeding their buck to doe objective. I doubt hunters will take it to the mature bucks like your say considering that it is a muzzleloader hunt and it starts only 3 days after the general rifle hunt ends. Sure a few good bucks will be taken but the sky is not falling.

I personally think it's a great idea! Every state that surrounds Utah has hunts that run way later into the year with a lot more permits given out than this proposal and somehow those other states still manage to have mature deer left after the hunts to take care of the breeding.

Yes exceeding 18-20 per doe objectives, but for anyone that's ever stepped foot in these units- Pine Valley and Zion to name two, there are just not enough solid type bucks to merit this after general season hunt. If were going to be Montana or Colorado and do rut hunts then lets do rut hunts but why toy around with the notion one year only to change it later on.

Also I'm not for creating any more LE units that border states where we are just going to send more wintering bucks to get shot. I.e. the North Slope / Summit proposal. I'm not a big fan anyways of all the hassle the state of Wyoming gives to those that hunt the Crawfords each year. To my knowledge, the DNR doesn't patrol the borders along the Paunsaugunt hassling Arizona hunters.

We shouldnt be hunting any bucks in this state in November period. Hate this idea with a passion. A good old buck makes it through the bow hunt the muzz hunt and the rifle hunt only to get hammered while he is rutting. WRONG WRONG WRONG let him breed for hell sakes. I dont care if it is a small amount of permits its not right.

Here is the issue I have with the 18/100 buck to do ratio. Unit 4/5/6 is counted as one herd. This unit is made up of primarily premo private property. Deseret, skullcrack, east canyon. Really some of the best mule deer habitat and private hunting in the state. Then you have small areas of public mixed in. The ratio is for the whole unit. So you might have stellar numbers on these private parcels and so so numbers on the few public areas. It's asinine to combine this unit into one, your obviously going to get a inaccurate count on the public. Which is where the pressure is going to be. That's the problem I have!
