I Think it get's Tougher by the Year?

But with a couple a Late Fall Rain Storms And Good ones that Sprouted New Green Feed up every where!

And Unusually Warm Fall Time Temps!

Along with Un-believable Scouting Pressure!

And Unbelievable Numbers of Elk Hunters/Pressure!

More & More Wheeler Trails Etched back in way beyond where they're Legal!

Finding Bigger Bucks was Damn Tough around here this Year!

I know there Ain't many Big Bucks left but the few that are left are Smart & were Nocturnal around here this year!

How bout in your neck of the Woods?

It has been extremely tough in my neck of the woods this fall. Archery season was extremely hit or miss with hardly any consistent rut activity between the 80 plus degree heat. First rifle season was a joke and second wasn't much better. Hunted every single day of the season and passed on numerous different bucks and never found anything worth punching my tag on. Tasting tag soup for the first time since I was 12 years old is getting harder and harder to swallow. Thank god I have a PLO cow tag to put some meat in the freezer at some point this year if the snow ever comes.

This year was a super tough year! I was lucky enough to fill my tag on a good buck but my grandpa, uncle and cousin had a hard time! We ended up filling 2/3 tags on the last day, one on an alright 3 point and at the last minute my cousin got his second deer ever which was a 2 point. They really need to do something or the deer herds are just gonna get run into the ground. Same with the spike and cow elk hunts, we saw a total of 6 elk in an area where we normally see a lot more. It was like a pumpkin patch! Too many tags are being given out.

Especially tough in nevada. First year in 24 years i haven't hunted... The bucks are thriving where i hunt but not being able to hunt is the toughest part. Spectator year :(

Best opener I've seen in years here in Idaho. We killed a couple of good bucks, mine has got to be 7-9 years old. Saw a couple other good bucks the day before. It has gotten tougher as it has progressed as pressure has sent the surviving bucks up higher. Lot's and lot' of elk also.

Hunted SE ID and Northern UT. More younger bucks, Less four pointers in general. A few monsters were shot this year. Some older bucks were starting to chase does early that lead to their death. I think all the rains in August and Sept, provided good feed, which kicked off some rutting early. Has anyone else seen rutting activity lately?

The last night of the Rifle Hunt/Sunday!

I seen a Medium Sized Buck wanting to do some Ruttin!

But He was the Only Buck I seen Thinkin about it!

Best year in a long time for deer and elk for me. Lots of elk early and talking too. Lots of good bucks. And a hand full of real big ones. Just didn't have a deer tag in that unit. ?

The weather seemed to be a big factor that limited success this year with the wild rain storms followed by super hot periods. My family did pretty well overall. My brother and his wife both shot decent four points on the Zion general season rifle hunt in Utah. The Panguitch Lake rifle deer was brutal this year for my other sister-in-law; she saw one spike the whole deer hunt. Overall I bet the success rates stayed pretty close to what they have been for the past several years. It seems like there are a lot more elk in southern Utah now than there used to be in the past.

Just my thoughts. Maybe I will draw a hunt next year.

for me the hunt last week in Southern Utah was very slow for shooters. Hot sunny and windless everyday. Deer weren't moving much and were back in early and out late- oh well

Hunting in the warm weather is tough! They just don't want to move, then after the first few days, the pressure has them digging even deeper into the thick stuff and moving even less.
Tough year for me in October.

August and September were good, but different types of hunts. Still no buck for me though.

Good year for elk in my neck of the woods.

I had a private land (small acreage) archery tag, and the private land was dependent on them coming in for water. It rained the entire hunt, so that sucked for me.

We've been hunting the Boulder area for 30+ years and it was the worst we've ever seen it. Not just no bucks but no deer period. 6 guys hunted hard for 4 days and saw less than 20 deer total. Very disappointing.

I have a friend who took 8 teenagers with his brother. They hunted the whole week and filled 8 tags. It was a Southern Unit. A few of the deer were yearlings.

I saw a fair amount of yearlings on Boulder. The biggest deer were in areas that can't be hunted.

Pretty tough to hunt when you have to stay logged in to monsterkilled 24/7.
Get out a the truck and off the net elkass

Best year ever!!
With all the moisture we got out here in Colorado starting from fall of 2013 to late summer this year, the deer all seemed to have grown thicker and taller vs previous years. There's no wonder a 300 incher was produced just recently.

A poor year for sure, might even be called pathetic, but every year has been that way lately.

We went 0 for 3 in Wyoming this year after 12 days of hunting the back country miles from the road. Only saw one shooter at long range and missed him. Saw quite a few small bucks. Saw 30 of them on opening day with none out past their ears. With all the small bucks, it might get good in Wyoming in another 2-3 years if the winters are mild. Then again, it might not get all that good because most of the medium sized bucks were dropped this year preventing them from becoming good bucks in the next year or two. (The old medium sized buck is rapidly becoming the new trophy buck).

I saved a lot of money by not hunting Utah this year. Last year I spent over $500 on tags (deer, 2 elk and moose) plus about $1500 on gas, not to mention grub and supplies. I spent 4 days on Elk Ridge this year looking at deer and elk, and that was better than hunting in Utah any day.

My hunting buddy hunted Utah and New Mexico this year along with Wyoming and ended up with just a 2X3 meat buck on the last day of the NM hunt to show for it.

It sure was a rough hunt. A dozen times a day i got the spotter on a buck and he turned out to be a 4x4 or better. It took 5 days to find an acceptable 3x4.
(Henrys management hunt)

Gotta agree with all the above. It was tough for us up in Northern Utah for both elk and deer. Saw only 1 elk and it was a 360 bull (spike-only general unit... and I had a cow tag!). Figured he had to have some cows with him, but no such luck. Too damn many elk hunters for my liking... more than I've seen in a LONG time. Deer hunt wasn't any better. Saw a lot of does... one little forky the night before the opener that I'm sure got popped by a road hunter opening morning. Managed to fill my tag on a big-bodied 3 pt (I'm a meat hunter first and foremost) on Friday before the 2nd weekend. He was the only buck I saw during the hunt. Way too many hunters, and we were off the roads as well. I'm sure the hot weather played a big part, but sad to see the direction things are heading... sure as hell not what they used to be. :-(

An excellent year for me. Seen at least a dozen bucks every day I hunted and saw seven Bulls, at least 20 cows during the general season elk hunt. Filled 3 out of four tags. 2 deer and 2 elk tags. Only reason we didn't get all 4 tags filled was because dad missed his buck at 36 yards with his smokepole LOL!

hay eye guard maybe you are part of the problem, throw that cow tag away and quit shooting the girls

"Best in years", that pretty much shows how damn fickle some guys are. I will answer. Despite the entire Sanpete valley either growing hay or corn, there are almost ZERO deer in the fields. 15 years ago before the pivot lines created all that wonderful feed and before SFW saved them, there were hundreds, if not thousands. Driving up Chalk Creek at night on the way to the Uintas there were hundreds and hundreds of deer in the fields, NOT NOW. We HAVE NO DEER!! Seeing a couple of bucks, even a few with more than two points is so exciting to a couple of guys they flood the forums with tales of how the deer herd "is back". A couple of problems, ONE, you shot that 1 1/2 old three point so he is dead, and TWO, bucks don't give birth. Getting excited about seeing a buck says nothing about the deer herd. We need another 75-100k deer to have a good herd, and they AINT THERE.

As for me personally, the 3 inches of rain in a day and a half on the Manti turned it from hunting to "how do I get my trailer of the mountain" contest, SUCKS but thats hunting.

Elk hunt had a BEAUTIFUL full moon, and wonderful 65 degree days at 9000ft, which made it a tough go. I am starting to notice the effects of killing cows on the elk herds in the areas I frequent, not seeing the HERDS(notice I said nothing about bulls) that we had over the last 15-20 years. Hope we aren't reaching a tipping point there(thanks DWR).

Lastly, Moose have become almost extinct it seems. I have read why that is believed but it is still sad. I love seeing them, and it was always fun being in the hills during the moose rut.

Lastly no. 2, This is the first year I have run onto GOATS!! Personally I have no interest in shooting one, but watching those little ones(kids?) bouncing around with the adults on a cliff face was a pretty cool thing to see. Having not been around them much it made for a great afternoon during the elk hunt.

Hey Cornhole,

Why don't you shut yours, and I won't tell you how to hunt either. I've never previously drawn that tag before, and ate soup over it... so it appears I'm not the problem after all. I appreciate you thinking of me however... that was very thoughtful. :D

In my younger days, I hunted the same place, using the same techniques, and substandard gear (optics) and expected different results. The truth is, I was hunting a poor area, using poor equipment, and imploring bad hunting stratgies. I have since started hunting better areas, with better equipment, and have changed the way I hunt all together. That was over a decade ago, and I can't say I have had a tough year since.

cabin fever what are you trying to say. Do you think there are as many animals now as in the past, you might be a great hunter, but don't just look at what you do every year. look at the whole picture, drive around in the mountains and as mentioned hay fields. the drw should be damn proud of themselves. get rid of the cow and doe tags you idiots (dwr I mean)

You are correct there are fewer deer now than 20 years ago, and I am not a proponent of doe tags either. With that said I have put more big bucks on the wall in the past 10 years than in my 27 years of hunting deer. I hunt an area that has virtually no winter kill, stellar genetics, and very good deer numbers. Tough hunting is an arbitrary term, especially if one does the same thing year after year and expects different results. I personally got tired of the same results and did something about it. I switched areas and got better optics and changed the way I hunt. I'm currently experiencing the best hunting of my life.

I believe you, and your right about same results doing things the same way. I know there are guys who are doing the same, but none of them would try to convince anyone about how good things are. They ain't. And now, I have zero data to back it(but neither does the DWR) the one bright spot, elk, seem to be getting strained. The mule deer are hurting everywhere(nation wide), but the elk are now being severly mismanaged. Every cow we kill is 7-8 elk that die with it(calves from that cow in her lifetime). We kill to many cows, and we should NEVER kill a doe.

Just got back from another unsuccessful NM deer hunt.
Rough country with no people. Only saw does ,fawns, spikes, coues, sporks and dinks....oh and 1 nice coues buck.
Did see the ass end of a real nice buck leaving camp at sunrise day AFTER my hunt....
Now on to elk,of which there are plenty....but it could be tough... here at home.

Here in Nevada we saw fewer deer but lots more hunters. Elk are doing well. Also hunted Colorado. Few deer and hard to find good bucks. fatrooster.

seen lots of bucks some small some big, shot a 28 inch 4x2 second day of the rifle season, had a blast chasing some whoopers with my bow

Hunted the same area where I shot a decent buck last year. Didn't see a deer for 2 days. Finally on the second Friday I saw 2 pretty good ones. It was windy and they were 1100 yards away. I think they were the same bucks I watched during the summer. Anyway I could not get any closer so I watched them until dark. Figured they would show up the next day or on Sunday, but never did. They will be bigger next year!
