This buck was killed by my grandpa in 1955 I believe...It was his very first deer he ever shot. It was shot in southeast utah. He entered it into the Ziniks sporting goods contest and took first prize winning a car that year. It hung in the store for years until the store closed down. We are now on the search for this buck and his antlers for him. Very little is known about its whereabouts we know at one point it was called the Marie Duvalle buck. And pictures are also found in an old orange cover edition of Utahs Biggest bucks. Any info or leads on this would be greatly appreciated. Call 435-459-1732 with info.

Wow, Wow, Wow. If that truck bed is 48 inches wide that rascal takes up the better part of it. I've gotten over lusting after wide sped mule deer but that one is treasure. I can understand your quest to locate your Grandfather's deer.

I'd put an add on ksl.com/classified along with every hunting forum, nationwide, if I were you. If that buck was pictured in a book I'll bet some large head collector knows the were-abouts of it. Unless he's been lost in a fire somewhere, somebody will know where he's hanging.

In fact, there are most likely Monster Muley members and/or readers that know the biggest "large head collectors" in the country, if you could get a couple of names from a few MMer's, they would know the rest of them. It can't be a very large group of people that collect big heads and I'm betting they all know each other and who's got what and where.

I wish you success in your search!

Just out of curiosity, if you don't have an objection, what year and where in SE Utah was the buck killed and what town was your Grandpa's store in. Knowing where it's last known location was, might help locating it.

Oh man, the old Zinik's and Wolfe's big buck contest days were great. Those were the good old days!
I measured bucks for Wolfe's for several years, starting in 1972 or 73. There were some really special bucks show up during those early years. Your grand dad's buck is one of the best of the special bucks taken!
Good luck finding it and even better luck getting it back!
Thanks for sharing the pic,
Zeke

The deer was killed on the Abajo mountains. It was not my grandpas store it was in the Ziniks sporting good store for years after it won the competition. I think this was all in 1955

I have a picture of a buck my grandpa shot back in the day, it wasn't his first but I believe it was his biggest. just about as big and wide as that buck but a different year, he also entered it into a contest and took second place winning a 30-30, he got the rifle but the buck was never returned, when I go back to my home town again I will post it also. that's an amazing buck your grandpa shot!!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-10-14 AT 08:55PM (MST)[p]One sweet buck. Maybe send a copy to all Utah and local state sporting good stores or even a bar. some bars have some big hidden toads

Lyman, try Rainbow' s End Bed and Breakfast in Challis, Idaho. They are a big collector of game heads. They might also have an idea of who else you might try. Also try the owner of Trophy Hunter magazine, I believe his name is Rusty Hall. Good luck and keep us posted.

Lyman, another long shot possibility. There was a gentleman from Oregon back in the 80's who was a buyer/
collector of large racks/sheds. He may be gone by now however, it is worth further investigation. His name was /is Earl Basso.

I did a cursory Internet search for him and a contact number but came up empty. I did come up with a company under his name in Oregon that buys antlers and furs but no contact info. Would be worth your time and effort to pursue it more rigorously.
Again, good luck.

didnt that turn into a rehab place??
Travis

Orion, last I heard it was a B and B and that had or still have an awesome collection of record class mounts. That is why I suggested Lyman check it out further. You could be right?

Travis, the link you sent is for a rehab center. That is the wrong B and B I was referring Lyman to. There is another Rainbow's End B and B in Challis, Idaho with a contact number of 208-879-5999 and e-mail address [email protected]

They advertise ownership of the Mundy Buck from NM as well.

This should clear it up.

My wife and I stayed at the Rainbow's end in Challis.
Nice place, interesting proprietor and some excellent trophies.
Sorry, I cannot recall enough about the mounts to know whether that buck was there or not.

i just called that number you posted and yes, it used to be the B&B but now it is the rehab center. i asked if they still had the mounts and they said that they did not.

Orion, it was the B and B I was thinking of. Obviously they changed but they need to remove their inaccurate Internet post that still promotes their defunct business and pictures of the Mundy Buck and claim to other record big game heads. The contact info I provided was taken directly from their obvious former non-existent business. Thanks for putting this lead to rest.

...try H&H in Palm Springs California.....Howard and Hollingsworth.....big collectors

There was a guy in Ennis, MT that collected big heads. I believe his name was Don Schaufler. There used to be some collector cards put out during the 90's that listed him as the owner of several huge mule deer. I just quickly looked up his name and there is a website www.antlerdesigns.com associated with his name. Maybe that could be a lead.
When I head home this weekend I'll look through my old collection of cards and see if I recognize your grandpas head.

Rainsbowsend no longer Collects or Buys Trophy Class Mule Deer since 2008 . I myself personally Bought most of the Collection in 2008 including the Mundy Buck . The owner of Rainbowsend BB currently Races cars , in fact is part ownership of some Nascar !!

Did you buy a big nontypical set of sheds collected in MT. Its a mule deer, although some claim its a whitetail. As a kid I remember them hanging in the local sporting goods store in Havre, MT. My dad bought the store and when he did I was excited that we would have the sheds, however, someone had purchased them shortly before and last I saw they were located at the Rainbows End Lodge. I always wanted to own these sheds and even contacted the Rainbows End lodge when he was selling his collection but was told he wanted to sell the collection as a whole.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-13-14 AT 05:09PM (MST)[p]AZMIGHTYMULIES , any chance you could PM LYMAN and provide him the names of any other larger mule deer antler collectors that he could contract regarding his search for the "Grandpa Buck"?
