Best Mule Deer Outfitter 180" Plus?

I need your help...I've been offered an all expense paid trophy mule deer hunt by a friend. He's always wanted to kill a "monster" muley and my task is to find the best place to go. The only place that he doesn't want to go is Mexico and we don't want to have to draw a tag. Please share any suggestions you've got!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-01-14 AT 10:56AM (MST)[p]For a sure thing, in Utah, buy an Alton CWMU tag, or buy a Henry Mountain auction tag. Then hire a proven outfitter. A 180" should be a chip shot on either hunt, with a knowledgeable guide. There are locations in Utah but they may not be as predictable. The cost for these hunts is extreme. But your asking for a fairly high end mule deer. Lots of 180" bucks are living in the west, however, finding them, on a predictable basis, is a pretty fair challenge.

There are other hunts, however others will need to offer their suggestions because I haven't researched other States.

Might entertain the Jicarilla Reservation, Rio Arriba County, NM. Know they offer late rut hunts in December however, am sure you have to go through a draw process. Check out their website by just typing Jicarilla Department of Game and Fish. Price used to be 10k but am sure it has gone up?

Another good choice is Nontypical Outfitters out of Wyoming. They have already chalked up two bucks over 200 this year and seem to pull out some monsters every year?

If price is no concern then you should be looking for better than 180. A Colorado Governor's tag and the right guide will get you 200 plus...same as in Utah. Wyoming and Montana are out in my opinion...probably some good bets in Arizona, Idaho, and Nevada too. You don't need a guide on the Henry's for 180 class deer, but if you spending the cash might as well try to go for a 200+. +1 on Alton, but probably already booked for next year.

Should probably set a price of $10k per hunter... I'm sure governor's tags might be pushing it!

With 10K a hunter, Alton's and Henry's tags are out, that leaves Alberta as some have suggested and the eastern Colorado plains as two I would look into. I'd take a hard look at the acreage being hunted, the more the better and private vs. public.

If Price isn't a Concern!

The Jic is currently 15K.

Non Typical kills some monsters without a doubt. But you should look into overall success rates. If I was wanting a 200 or nothing on a WY tag I'd book them without a doubt. However that doesnt mean they have the highest success rate on bucks in the 180+ range.

I think you'd be better off looking at private ranches in CO or even UT. Contact Todd Black and I'm sure he could give you some insight on CMWU tags available that would fit your needs.

Also take a look at Cabelas TAGs program. There consultants are will build the hunt that best matches what you are looking for.

10K will buy you a great hunt, with a good chance at a 180 Buck. But, it will not buy you a guaranteed shot at a 180, gonna need to up the budget to 15 ish to get that type of hunt.

Maybe some guys on here can point you in the direction of some good CWMUs here in Utah... They are basically landowner tags.

Colorado does land owner tags and there's obviously some great areas to hunt on private land.

Check out bucks and bulls in utah they have some premo land with some stud muleys. 180+ should be no problem. Travis is who I would try and talk to.

Alberta.

My first call would be to graham brigden.

Eastern colorado on some private ground would be good too.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Looks like I've got some research to do...please keep posting places and outfitters!

Based on their photos, it looks like 180" bucks are the exception, not the rule. But that makes sense given their prices.

Just because a rich guy gets trigger happy on a 170 buck doesn't make it thier fault. They killed 2 this year over 205". Trust me. If you want a 180 deer and keep your finger off the trigger for more than 5 minutes then you'll get one.

Here's a 32" public land muley we got down here a couple years ago, but as you can see he's no 180" plus. We don't get trigger happy and ones this size are few and far between. Just would love to find a place where 180" or bigger is the norm.

Keep sharing suggestions please!

I agree with those that have said Alberta. Several outfitters there that are very consistent on 180 or better bucks.

Also, Scott Limmer, Comanche Wilderness Outfitters, Colo. eastern plains.

No one has said anything about west Texas!!! OTC tags and some GIANT deer!!! Plus a lot of the big outfitters have MLD tags (Management land deer tags) so that means the season is extended from oct 31 to 1st day in Feb. I can put you in touch with some guys I know if you would like? I have one buddy that killed his smallest deer in 6 years this year and it's a 182 his best is a 204.
I took a 210 last year and I guided my brother in law this year and he took a 188.
I was out this morning and saw one 5x5 that would be in the mid 180s and then I saw Mr. Big!!!! He will be in the 210-220 range 7x7.

just go high fence, save some money, I mean really with the big time outfitters your just a shooter anyways, SCI is as good as b.c. any day!!!

Try Bridger Petrini with Tristate Outfitters. They have hunts in Colorado and New Mexico. I know the Colorado hunts have consistently produced exceptional bucks.

For my money I'd go with Bull Basin in Colorado. They kill some giants every year and the have some Primo stuff here in eagle county. I've seen some bucks on the Sunlight ranch they lease that would make you cry in the past.

Can we be friends?
