Larry, these are for you my friend!

I have been going out to the island to try and get Mule Deer shots for a couple of years and I finally came across some in a situation where I could get some decent shots.

I sure wish the lighting was better but you take what you can get when it presents itself to you.

Hope you enjoy!

Just a really young buck with some great genetics!

Thanks everyone for the kind remarks!

Squirrel, I was fortunate to only be about 40 yards from them and they were very comfortable with that. I shoot a Nikon D7100 with the new AF-S 80-400mm lens.

That explains a lot OSOK, all I can get that close to are lil pisscutters and does. I thought maybe you took Shedygagas lessons to heart and were digiscoping those at 300+. Which would lead to some squirrel depression as mine are still stuck in a rut. I need to spend some acorn money on some new crap and am too cheap. Or I just need some dumber deer.

Yeah Squirel, you probably already know there is just now substitution for getting close and having good equipment. I know Sheddy gets some awesome stuff and when it comes to digiscoping I don't think there are many that have his abilities or can compare with his results, but even that can't compete with a DSLRs sensor and good glass to shoot through and getting to within 30-40 yards.

Believe me, I have been to the island numerous times and this was the first time I was able to get any decent shots of some nicer bucks. I am usually chasing small Bucks and Does as well. There are many trips I have made to the Island and came home with nothing but some shots of a Meadowlark or something, if I was lucky!

Part of it is definitely putting in the time and just getting a little lucky by being in the right place at the right time. When you spend a lot of time in the field you are much more likely to be able to capitalize on those opportunities :)

I will post some more AI shots I have done soon of other critters.

Have a great day!

Thanks Larry, I will definitely get a hold of you next time I go out.

Elkassasin, I had never thought about this in the terms of the long range, short range sense but that's funny right there!

I envy you. This stupid job keeps stealing all of my time and energy. My bucket list: take pictures like these year round till I die.
Awesome pics! Thanks for sharing.
