CWMU experiences

Anyone have any info they would like to share about a cwmu deer hunt that you have hunted. I have 12 points and looking to try a cwmu if I could get some input on some good experiences .

I've hunted 2 different CWMU's both were not my hunt, but my brothers-in-law. Both were great experiences for them, but neither had ever shot a buck bigger then a 3 point so a decent 4 point was all they were looking for. The best thing was lack of pressure. We were able to glass up bucks and not worry a whole lot about other hunters messing with them. They both only had 5 points so they hunted lesser CWMU's. With 12 points you should be able to find a better unit with possibly better quality deer. Good luck

With 12 points, I would look at a Limited Entry hunt. You get unlimited time to scout and learn the area and you also get more time to hunt.

If you don't already know the CWMU you want to apply for, it might be a huge risk as you will spend the first couple days scouting and then only have a few to hunt. You are also at the mercy of the operator. Some are great guys, but others are not.

Deseret would be a good option with 12 points, and you could try the Alton as well. I think you still need several points to draw those though.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-15 AT 03:51PM (MST)[p]For what its worth..... I'm going to have to go with Matt on this one. If you look at your odds there are only 1-2 CWMUs that are worth anything that you have a remote chance to draw. Certainly most of them carry some good deer but most of the time you have to be pretty lucky to kill a good buck on a CWMU unless you are guided or happen to draw the top one or 2 units.

It looks like to me that there are several LE units you could rraw some of which offer some great opportunity and some great deer, the SJER archery for example.

If you decide to go with a particular CWMU, I'm happy to give you my 2 cents worth of an opinion.

their is not cwmr out their that does not put you as a second rate pain in the azz, all they want is the big money.go L.E. that way if you don't get a big one its your own doing and not some one sticking it to you!!!

Try two bear ranch, Its a good CWMU with great bucks.

Not true at all. I've hunted 3 different units, and had good hunts on all of them! Killed my only Antelope, one of my best bucks, and my biggest bull on a CWMU.

I don't have any good stories about a public hunter on a CWMU. But in general, if you are not the big-money-hunter, you will play second-fiddle (or third or fourth, etc.) And if it's a bad year for animals on their property, all the worse for you.

However, if it's a good year for animals, and let's say a couple big-money guys only hunted archery and a few others harvest out on the first and second days, well suddenly, you're huntin with a rifle in a good area, and there isn't anyone else to hunt, so now you get your pick... That's what everyone plays the CWMU lottery for.

I would recommend an LE hunt. All the time you want in the area. Far, far less pressure than any general season unit. And often times, more and better animals than most CWMUs for public hunters.

:) :) :) Good luck no matter what.
