Too Early to Scout?

I'm planning a back country mule deer hunt in the Uinta mountains of Utah. My idea is to hunt around tree line. Is it too early to start scouting that type of country?

Are the deer up that high yet? Will I be able to tell if the bucks i'm seeing (hopefully) will be worth chasing in August? Etc?

I will have time closer to the season to head back up into the areas I plan to hunt.

Thanks in advance!

Go for it ! I scouted a new area last weekend at 8500-9500 ft elevation and found plenty of deer . It was a little early to determine the size of the bucks , but it was very clear that a few would turn out much better than the others . Even if you don't find many deer its better than sitting on the couch . Good luck

I was in western Wy last week end, still lots of snow but the bucks were there a 10k feet. As mentioned theres a ton of growing left by mid July you should have a good idea about size.

Its time, get your boots on.

I will say though, driving past the North Slope last week, I was suprised to see how much snow is still up there.

Tree line in the Uintas is closer to 11,000 feet.

Does it appear to be an exceptional horn growth year in western Wy?

My dad and I had to cancel a planned pack trip up to King's Peak from the North side because there's too much snow... At least for those of us not wanting to use ice picks and such... :) It'll depend on where you go, and its likely you will have snow around, but I'm sure some areas on the North Slope will be open enough to hike in... The South Slope even moreso.

Thanks for the help/advice guys! I ended up going up for two days. Virtually no snow on the south slope.

+1 its always too late though... you can be learning trail heads roads to get around unit, camping areas, scouting lower elevation, walking ridges to learn lay of the land etc... always something to learn when in the woods.
