I just purchased a 300 weatherby. Now I'm trying to decide which weight and brand of over the counter ammunition to purchase. I'm debating between 165 and 180 gr. bullet. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I like both of them....but I shy towards the 180's..that gun seems to shoot them a little better, plus you get a little more on the longer shots.

I like the 180 gr bullets alot better. Wthby is proud of their ammo; I've tried different loads and without a doubt, the Federal Premium Safari's in the 180 trophy bonded bear claw is awesome. Tried the Nosler Partitions, but my gun just doesn't like 'em.

I shoot one too! the ultralight s/s,Since you posted on the elk sight,I would highly recomend the 180's the 165's are too fast for elk, and you won't get propper penetration.
I used 200gr partitions to shoot my Kodiak Brown Bear and they worked great, he was pretty much done for after the first shot, and they shoot fairly flat too!

If you go with Weatherby brand ammo pick up some 180gr Barnes X's and then pick up some Federal High energy 180gr TBBC's and see which one shoots better. Either way I'd stick with the 180's. Good luck.

I have a 300 weatherby mag but I handload my own. I use 180 gr. nosler partition ballistic tip and imr4350 powder at 78 grains. It's a little hotter then the ballistics chart recomends (75 gr) but it shoots great groups at just a tad more then 3100 fps...

Went to a store today looking for both Weatherby and Federal ammo. They had the 180gr Weatherby Partitions and the BarnesX but the owner said that the Partitions are better, less copper fouling in barrel. Anyone know if this is true?
He did not have the Fed. 180gr in stock.
The Weatherby 180 Partition's were $53.00 a box, pretty expensive to practice for a pattern on these 180's.
Going through Reno in a few weeks so will check over there maybe will find it cheaper.

Midsouth Shooters Supply shows the Federal 180 gr Nosler Partitions in stock at a price of $41.93. I have ordered reloading supplies from them for several years. They have always shipped my orders within a day of the order.

midsouthshooterssupply.com will get you there.

Really depends on where you buy your shells. Some of the little Ma and Pa stores will charge you a second mortgage for them. I bought a few boxes at a local Wally World and they had the Wthby factory ammo, 180 gr noslers for 29.96 a box........the same price they were charging for the pt ex cheapies. Somebody obviously made a little mistake so I cashed in on them. The big deal was on the 7mm Wthby mag shells. I can't remember off hand, but I think they were something like 23 or 24 bucks a box. Heck, the brass costs this much. A couple of weeks later, a local sporting goods store was running an ad for Remington shells for 9.99 a box and magnum shells for 11.99 a box. Had to cash in and pretty much take their inventory on Wthby 300 mag, 190 extended range bullets. Have shot these and they perform very well. When a deal presents itself, you gotta take advantage of the situation. Now if I could find some .340's cheap..............

I've shot 5 animals using Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claws....180 gr in 300 Wby and 165 gr in 30-06 the farthest any one of them traveled is 20 yrds....that being said the Weatherby ammo is much more accurate and consistant than the Federals...I get incredible groups using Weatherby 180 gr with Hornady Spire Pts....have not shot anything other than paper with those yet.

i also shoot the 300 wby. i would definately recomend the 180 grn trophy bonded. i have shot the 165 grn before and with the high ballistics of that gun shot clean through deer (behind the shoulder) without nocking them down. there is so much energy in those bullets i would never shoot anything smaller than the 180's.... and the ballistics are still there. im also a federal fan. there brass hold together longer if your going to reload.
