Great buck!!! Definitely pushing that 190+ mark. I came up with 191" but I'm horrible at judging off pictures

I think he'll push 190 before he's done but i'd guess 184 gross right now. Those extras make him a Shooter for sure if i had the chance!

Thats a great buck.
I think your very close on the gross score.
He also looks like he breaks the 30 inch mark.

Your posts are all very interesting.
Thank you for that.
However I believe this buck is done growing his antlers for this year.

So, you like my stuff but i'm wrong? lol. I'd be interested to know how you can be so sure of that?

Excellent water and suburb feed year, some of those points look like the end of broomstick handles, then there are the extras which can and do add inches late, and we are not even to mid August yet.

I agree that he already has a beautiful shaped rack but i'll stick with my opinion that in this wet year with explosions of great feed everywhere, he may yet put on a few inches. :)

I don't know if he's done growing or not but I do know what velvet looks like when it has started to dry out and this buck isn't showing any of those signs. All of the deer I've been seeing still have thick, lively velvet. The elk are drying and shrinking to the antler ripe for rubbing in the near future.

That's a great buck Gasser. He is no doubt a 190's buck by my estimation and a fantastic looking one at that. He has the mule deer quartet: thick, high, eye guards, extras. --------SS

He's sweet! You going to be able to get him? Are you even hunting him? Fun one to test your skills on for sure.

Nice mass, long main beams and eye guards. Sure looks like your estimate is close to me. Hope we see a picture of you with him this fall. Then we'll know for sure.
Good Luck!!

"Photoperiodism ends antler growth every year round the first week of august for most critters"

Yeah? Funny the critters i'm seeing every day didn't get the memo. lol

You may get an extra week or two in cali, but the growing period ends roughly the same time every year due to photoperiodism. Here in co and surrounding ( i assumed utah/wyo buck in pics) that's the first week of august. Change in daylight changes testosterone, ending antler growth. Just a scientific theory I believe in.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-15 AT 04:11PM (MST)[p]DW, I'm well aware of phototropism and photoperiodism and how it effects antler growth, was fascinated by the "theory" at U of Az when there studying Wildlife Bio. At the time, it was supposed as the number one reason limiting deer in their antler growth but other factors came into play as well. This years wet weather, late spring, and late availability of preferred feed, are such factors.

I'm not talking a bunch of added growth here but it doesn't take much to add to a already huge buck's total inches. If a deer is still in full velvet and the lush nutrients are still available as they feed, no reason to believe that a animal won't put on some increment of additional growth.

If you don't agree, fine, we'll leave it at that, similar to you believing that quality ammo is not worth the money.

The sharper looking, non bulbous, even coloring tips also indicate he is basically done IMO.

I think you are within 5" of gross score.

It is just my opinion that he is done growing. I cant be sure but after 59 years of living with and studying Mule Deer Bucks I feel fairly confident this guy is done.I agree with you that he is a shooter for sure.

buckhorn, You miss my point. above, instead of a backhanded complement saying that i am wrong, state your own opinion and i'll be good with that.

Even though you, me, or all of us are wrong, no matter, it's your opinion and you are welcome to it, we'll be all cookies and cream. :)

There are few places or situations where I would not be shooting that buck.

He's a mid 190's buck I think. Not quite gonna hit the 200" mark, but he's a brute..!!

DW Photoperiodism sets the timing of estrous and therefore the rut. I don't think it necessarily ends ends antler growth. Case in point: I killed a 6 year old bull moose in WY on September 3, 2011. The bull was in full velvet and the tips of some of the top tines had not finished growing. That year was a heavy snow year with a late spring. When I scouted on July 4th I found deep snow and antlers barely starting to grow on deer and moose. I think antler growth was delayed and finished late.

He's breaking the 200" mark. If you were thinking of passing him up. let me know where he is and ill take care of him for you.

I have a 196 5/8" buck on the wall that is very similar to the buck in your photo. I think your 196 guess is very close. It will probably net out around 189". Mine netted 188 2/8". Cheaters kept is out of the books.
