New Mexico 2c

Got a buddy that his son drew New Mexico 2c rifle tag this year. It is a November tag that is supposed to be pretty good. He isn't having much luck scouting. Is this a migration hunt or is it something that gets crazy good during the rut. Any thoughts or ideas would be great.

That is about as good a tag as you can get in NM. Hunt the rim rock and you will find the bucks. You can also hunt the thick nasty stuff in the bottom of Largo canyon. Lots of bucks in the salt cedar, but you really need one or two guys to push the bottom and the shooter(s) to be up on top ready for them to pop out. If you hunt the bottom the deer usually pop out 50 to 100 yards behind the pushers. Those bucks are smart. More like a quail hunt than a deer hunt. I literally thought I found a shed in that thick stuff until it got up and ran away. I got to about 5 feet of it before he busted out. Crapped myself when he took off. Again lots of deer in that salt cedar, but not too fun to hunt.

I drew a 2c muzzy tag a few years ago. They are resident bucks. The deer can be tough to locate but when you do locate deer there are some great bucks there. That rifle tag is fantastic from what I have heard.

You wont see a lot of deer but when you do, stand by. Best tag in the state, hands down. Get up on the rims and glass, then glass some more....and some more. Those are resident bucks that should be rutting during the hunt. Till then they will be near nocturnal. Glass the upper thirds of the east side of the N/S canyons. Not sure of the water down there this year, but if there isn't a lot, that's key. Those deer will be near a water source. Hunt is much tougher when there's water everywhere. Good luck and post some pics....
