How big of a tripod do you normally use? I am going on my first mule deer hunt and need a tripod but I'm not sure what to get. I won't be using it a lot so I'm not looking for something expensive. Weight is a minor concern but not a real big deal.

Anyone have some thoughts?

I still use a smaller Velbon. Been using it for years. Not sure on the model as it wore off. ULTRA-LUXi maybe...???

LAST EDITED ON Aug-19-15 AT 11:39AM (MST)[p]A lot depends on how big and how heavy your scope it. If it is just an average size 65mm than a $20 generic tripod form the box stores will work fine.

For my Vortex Nomad I use a $20 tripod I bought at the Ritz camera store. It was inexpensive and has worked great for 6+ years.

Really like my vortex ss-p for smaller stuff. Works great with binos and small spotting scopes. Its a great combo when I go deep and all I take is 15x binos. It doesn't hold my 85 vortex razor very well though. I threw an outdoorsmans pan head on the ss-p legs for the razor and really like it. Hard to beat for $130 in my opinion

I used to have a light weight one but went to a heavier one this year due to it moving in the wind. when glassing I had to spend more time looking for a spot out of the wind than glassing, it sucked. Now I just set up and glass.
