Walking Away

We all know the challenge of trying to judge a buck's width as he walks away from us. They always look wider than they are and we can't use his ears as our ruler (18-24 inches on average, we're told). So, I have 2 questions:

1. How wide (on average) do you think a mature buck's body is?
2. How wide are these two bucks (blurry screen shots from my video)?

Never put much though into the body width...

I have to think that a deer's ears are usually wider than it's body, until it reaches maturity. A mature buck probably has that 20" wide body, and I wouldn't doubt if someone told me it could be more.

As such, I think the first buck is 28" and the second one is 24"

When a big buck is walking away from you, you should take 4in off what you think he is width wise and you will be in the ball park pretty dam close. So if you think a buck is 28in when he is going away from you, take 4in off and that buck will be 24in wide. It is a real good way to be pretty close. It has worked for me for years.

Edwardsc,

That's an interesting tactic. Seems reasonable to me? Any thoughts on the width of a mature buck's body, as he walks away?
