Archery 200' Typical Goes Down;

I was extremely disappointed this year to learn that I had not drawn an early archery tag in the state of Utah. I was still excited to do lots of scouting and hunting with my good friend, Matt Bateman. I told Matt about a month ago that I was starting to "get a good vibe" about his hunt....
I spotted this buck high up in the rocks and shale early on Saturday morning. He finally made his way to a small patch of aspens and spruce pines and lied down. I got ahold of matt and had him move into position 150 yds below the bedded buck. Then I hiked up the mountain and got positioned above the bedded buck. Matt gave me a "thumbs up" meaning he was ready for the action to begin, so I dropped down off the cliffs and worked my way over to the spruce patch where the bucks had bedded. It didn't take long for the buck to get nervous. He suddenly stood from his bed, turned and began running down the mountain directly towards Matt. The big Buck ran past Matt at 40 yards and Matt made a perfect quartering away shot; back ribs moving forward into the heart and lungs. The buck was dead in less than 10 seconds. In no time Matt and I were whooping and high-fiving each other with hugs and smiles all around. We knew we had just taken a giant buck.....a mainframe 4 point with droppers on both sides....but we didn't realize until we scored the rack that the buck would gross over 200"!!!!
We both realize what a tremendous buck we had just taken. Simply put, there aren't many 200" bucks out there on public land with a general season tag. So we feel lucky and blessed to have harvested such a great animal.
Kudos to Matt for once again putting the arrow where it needed to be when the chips were down. Well done Bro.
I could not be happier for you!
Kip

LAST EDITED ON Sep-04-15 AT 10:50PM (MST)[p]Thanks for the kind comments everyone.
Some of you have PM'd me and asked questions regarding how we (Me or Matt) decide who kills which animal.
Well, the answer is quite simple. Matt and I trust each other like brothers and treat our hunting set-ups as such. There really has never been an issue over who gets to shoot which animal. It simply comes down to who is up on this one.....who'se turn is it, mine or yours? Or just who is in the best position to kill this animal.
It's that easy and there has never been any drama with Matt and I in this regard.
And I am genuinely happy when Mattt gets any arrow in something becuause 9 Times out of 10 I was involved in helping him in some way and that makes his success a total team effort amongst close friends.
No jealousy here. Just high fives and hand shakes as we enjoy the monent of one harvest, while searching and looking for the next one!!
We have a very close friendship and is only complimented by our love of hunting.
When I kill, it feels like we both killed....and vice versa....
It's a rare Friendshio that we have And we can only hope it brings many more memories of successful hunts to come!!

That's how it should be. I'm always happy when someone in my camp shoots an animal and the bigger, the better. Congrats on a great hunt.

Thanks, Kip. I've been wondering if we would be getting some pics from you this year. I don't know you or Matt personally, but I have admired your success from afar- not only because of the great animals you take, but because of how you take them.

You are the epitome of what I would like to be as a hunter. You don't appear to be a wealthy man, and although I suspect you have some gripes with the way wildlife are managed in Utah, you rarely gripe. You take your general season deer tag (minus this year apparently), work your behind off and consistently kill deer that rival what others are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to kill. And then, to top it all off, you seem tickled right to death to get on monstermuleys.com and share your success with all of us lowlife want-to-bes.

To this point I haven't come anywhere near the success you have had- probably because I haven't worked near as hard as you have, but if someday I were to consider myself a great hunter, I would hope that I could do it the way that you have done. You and Matt have my deepest respect as hunters.

Thanks Wildman for your kind words.
Much appreciated.
Yeah Matt and I are definitely not Rollin in the Dough ($$$)
Our hunts are always DIY public land general season tags. That's about all we can afford. But I think there's a lot of guys here on MM who fall into that category.
And, truth be told....I like being in "that category."
It's full of good guys trying to do the best they can in the woods while pinching pennies in one hand and teaching their kids how to hunt/shoot with the other.
Those are my kinda guys and I think there's lots of good ones here on MM.
Glad to be a part of it with you all.
Keep sharing!!
Kip
