Hello all, my son drew a youth hunt up in Unit 2B NM. The hunt is Oct. 17th. This is my first time up to this unit and my son's first deer tag. Anyone have any suggestions on where to go. Just looking to bag something/anything. Thanks for any input.

you will see small bucks off just about any road enjoy a nice hunt. the closed roads are great places to walk in to glass and hunt.

That's encouraging to hear. Any suggestions on where to start or is it a lot of road hunting? I'm hoping to find a high point so we can glass.

I'm actually going to chime in real quick. On the youth hunt you will not see a lot of little bucks. The deer have not migrated in yet. It is a tough hunt. We hunted it 3 years a go. We did not see a buck in 3 days. I've hunted it on my own twice on general hunts so I know the areas pretty well. No bucks, few does. Your best bet is to scout a bunch and find a resident deer. 4th day we found a 170 inch buck, that he killed. I wouldn't really recommend this hunt for a youth that is just starting out. More for a kid who is willing to hunt hard. Its a good way to get a kid frustrated. So be careful.

One last thing. If they would push the hunt back two weeks it would be phenomenal for the kids with 2 points running around everywhere. The hunt dates are too early, I can't figure out why they throw kids in on this hunt when the deer just aren't there yet. Just new mexico I guess.

Thanks for the input. I just hope to bag out and enjoy some nature. It looks like a big unit with a lot of ground to cover. Gonna try our look up towards the top.

Go to Caracas Mesa (spelling ?) you should be able to get him a buck there. Last time I was there, there were a lot of wild horses in the area...

Don't road hunt get out and do a little hiking deer should be on back side of ridges where road hunters can't see them.

Good luck

Very tough hunt. Very few deer and very few big deer. I hunted the youth hunt twice and tagged out opening morning of the first hunt but only saw a fork horn on the second hunt and we hunted for 5 days. We saw a good number of big buck tracks but we never could locate one of them. I believe those deer are mainly nocturnal due to all the oilfield and hunting traffic, so a good way to hunt those deer is to walk on a high point and glass the shaded trees and rocks looking for bedded buck. Goodluck on the hunt.

Thanks for the advice. I had a buddy go up there for a muzzle hunt, he said there were quite a few does around. He also seen a few bucks, although he didn't get a clean shot and missed. Overall I was told the deer are in there. Just hoping to bag out.
