Those of you that have experienced this rifle hunt in the past, how was the opening weekend vs the remainder of the hunt? I have the entire hunt to be there, but I am wondering if it would be worth it to skip the first 2 days and let the people clear out a bit and let the deer calm down?? What's your thoughts?

I would hunt the first two days, then take a break and come back for the end if I had to get to work for a few days. If it is travel reasons, I would rather hunt the end than the beginning.

The deer do not need time to calm down because they are always calm (tame like). Sometimes the later part of the season will get the last few big ones time to get to the low country and come out of the woodwork.

The trick to the books is finding one that is big enough for you. That can take time so the more time out there the better.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-06-15 AT 02:14PM (MST)[p]My 2 cents and it aint worth 1 cent... Have fun,,, enjoy the hunt with whoever your with. We as hunters have lost what its all about... It shouldn't be about where can I find the most bone...It should be about having fun with freinds and family... Ive been caught up in the inch game and I found its not as fun as just enjoying the hunt... Enjoy your hunt and post pics when your done, no matter the inches or if you harvest one or not...
have fun...

My 74 yr old Dad had the north Tag last year and it was the perfect hunt for him. Woke up opening day to find several small 4 points feeding right behind our camp. He missed a couple of opportunities and they ended up being the best bucks we got him on while we were down there. I did see a couple of other bucks opening day that were bigger but they were off the road a ways and we couldn't get him there in time. After a couple of days he killed a small 4 point with all the grandkids in tow. A great memory for all involved. Opening morning seemed to be better for us but we still saw plenty of deer the next couple of days.

Dropper... You want to be out there the whole time. In 2011, the biggest buck we saw was Friday night before the hunt. My dad killed the 2nd biggest deer 6 days later. I believe it is a crap shoot and the more days you are there, the better. You may need to hunt ina coue areas before locating the deer as well, and two days could mean the difference between having an awesome hunt or not.

PM me if you need more direction...

Good luck and I sure hope to hear some good news from you my friend. After all, thats my tag you got in your pocket. :)
