I had the great opportunity to hunt 3rd season deer this year on private land in Colorado. It was an awesome hunt, we saw and passed up a bunch of deer that weren't quite big enough. We had scouted a giant buck in this area, and knew he was close by. We watched a small herd of does feed back into a small canyon, and thought the giant might be with them, so we snuck around to the next canyon over, and hiked up the back side of the ridge that separated the two canyons. Once we topped out, we found this buck with the does. I took one look at his frame, and decided he was big enough. A 100 yard shot with the 7 mag put him down, and he collapsed within 10 feet. Double lung shot just behind the shoulder. I didn't realize he had the extras until I walked up on him. There was definitely not any ground shrinkage! He isn't the same deer we were looking for, but he turned out to be a stud of a buck! The other giant lives on!
This is my biggest buck to date, and I'm glad my dad was there by my side the whole time. If it wasn't so cold that morning, my boys wouldn't have slept in, and they could have been there too. But, they were there when my dad got his buck later the same day, so it turned out to be a great day! Oh, and we got 3 coyotes that day too!
