ok, stats are out for last year.
Look at the DELK tags or antlerless elk tags that accompany
the deer tag.
The success is ridiculously low. I know your taking a chance, but hell.
They sold 670 tags for the rubies and 575 for area 6.
3 percent success in the rubies.
I got up at the state quota setting meeting and told them
they were not being honest with the sportsman on this.
there isn't 670 cows in the rubies, or at least there is not
supposed to be.
This is a cash cow (excuse the pun) for the dept.
area six was a little better at 10% success but still
Come on
This is wrong.
15 cows killed on 670 tags sold.
THIS IS A RIP OFF!
I'm gonna be interested to see what they propose this year.

The unit I live in gives out 10,000 rifle deer tags and unlimited OTC archery deer tags . The unit averages between 2-3% success , they don't care about the deer or the anything else except the money . The deer population and success rate is pathetic , but hunters still buy the tags .

In specific units where they don't want elk I was under the impression they were try to eliminate them

They've been trying to get rid of the ruby elk herd for years because the ranchers don't want em there.

It always pays to do your research. Some of these Fish and Game departments would sell Wooly Mammoth tags if they thought people would buy them. Hey, it's an opportunity.

The only time I've had a Mammoth tag in my pocket, I see tons of chupacabra scat and tracks everywhere. I think the chup's are really keeping the Mammoth herd numbers down. Leave it to the government....

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-21-16 AT 04:48PM (MST)[p]They are trying to keep Elk out of the Ruby's. Not sure on current estimates, but last I saw was about 100 head. If there were 100 Elk in the rubies and they want them gone, they will sell the tags.

I can assure you that if every Elk was hunted out, they would refund tags. Between all the tags combined that were sold for Cow Elk in the rubies, they still did not add up to 100 head killed. And I am sure that 100 is a VERY low estimate (I would say there probably 400+ Cows roaming these days).

They put all these tags out because they are trying to get rid of the Elk. The more hunters available, the more chances of killing them. Apparently though, 670 tags for the DELK was not enough as they are still running around........

And yes, they are trying to keep the Elk from taking over the Ruby's. They do not want them in there. Nevada is not trying to rid themselves of the Elk population, just keep them in certain areas.

they've been trying to get ready of those elk in the Rubies since at least 1995. My old boss in Elko drew it as a depredation either sex tag that year and shot a 5 point. He said there was a lot of elk back then just hard to get permission on the right property to get up to the elk.I can't imagine how many elk are in there now

Please excuse but i think there is a story worth telling here about Elk in the Ruby's.

Not sure of the year but i drew a Rubies tag that year, early 80's and as usual, after cruising the prime bitterbrush patches along the foothill transition of the Ruby's that were within the big ranches perimeters, and checking out the small, average, to decent bucks with the does that like to feed there at night, my Uncle would drop me off so i could start my real hunt. We'd plan on him picking me up several canyons over, again down on the Ranch roads, later in the afternoon but before dark 30.

Up i'd go. In those days i trained year round and i'd already had about two months of hunting season built into me legs so as i recall, the climbing seemed effortless as more and more hard to get to Public land opened up in front and the sides of me.

That was the beginning of the usual and one particular hunt had me finishing by my dropping off thru a lower but nice looking steep basin that had a golden quakie patch that was narrow but ran uninterrupted, right up and down the middle of that basin. My Uncle was watching me through his glass from far below at his rig, he didn't know what to think of my antics, I'd close in on the patch then run away back up the hill. I'd go up the basin then down, in and out, he didn't know what to think.

All i know is that soon after i topped out and looking down along those quakies, i saw what was either a bull elk or a huge Muley buck with a wide spread, duck back into that longish patch. So the hunt was on but i wasn't sure what i was hunting. The view i had was only a moments image to process and i just wasn't sure. During the next hour, i saw glimpses of said critter. Never was there a confirming view. I could get him to move and could hear him, but every time i thought i busted him out, i'd run back up the hillside to get a shootable view of the guy. He never did show himself that day.

Back down at the truck, i asked my Uncle if there were any Elk in that part of the Ruby's? He replied, Joey, if you see something that looks like a big elk, shoot it! i LMAO and remembering back, i still do to this day.

My Uncle Killed that Elk Buck, as we named him, several days later while hosting his best buddy from High School. At least i got to take the pic. 33 or 34" as i remember.
