LAST EDITED ON Apr-15-16 AT 11:13PM (MST)[p]Twist to Mntman's question...

Question:
How many years/seasons would you give up mule deer hunting in all states for one guaranteed tag on the Henry's, or a similar unit, with weapon of your choice?

(Mntman...props to you for asking the question in the 'Would you?' string. It's a great question. But it just seemed that people did not have to think about it. Either it was an easy 'yes' for those at end of hunting career, or easy 'no' for those that were not. Forgive me for kind of hijacking it...but I think this is the question that needs to be asked.)

Maybe two years I could hang it up for one Henry Mountains rifle hunt. Maybe

LAST EDITED ON Apr-16-16 AT 01:10PM (MST)[p]I guess I don't "get" the obsession with units like the Henries....Would I love to hunt the area and have a great chance at a great buck? Ya....But I wouldn't give anything up to get it. Where I enjoy hunting there is typically at least a decent chance at a great buck any given season (barring any natural catastrophies)if you put in the time and effort .
That "chance", paired with my sheer love of the hunt, is what keeps it exciting for me.
I guess if I were to play along a bit better, I would have to agree with Brian's response above....maybe 2 years...maybe. And that is because growing up and living in a draw state I have waited multiple years without drawing....but the "chance" of drawing each year kept me excited.

How many years of mule deer hunting would I give up for one Henry Mountains any weapon tag? Now THAT is a tough question.

The first thread was simple. But I would absolutely sit out deer hunting for 5 years for that tag. I still have elk and other animals to hunt in that time. I wouldn't give up mule deer hunting forever, but 5 years I would swap. Maybe a few more.

LOL, You couldn't pay me to hunt in Utah again, anywhere in Utah. I've met a couple handfuls of wonderful people from that State here, treated me as i treat them, super guys i'd love nothing better than to share a hunt with them someplace else but in reality, i've spent two deer seasons hunting that state out among the masses and have come to the conclusion that forever hunting a general unit there 7-365 is similar to what it must be like in one of the Devils perverted versions of Hell.

It wasn't the country and it wasn't a lack of animals, it was the people who once seeing the license plates on my truck or maybe not liking the curves of my hat, they acted as if i was less than a real person or indifferent to my questions, like, could you please tell me where's the nearest place to get fuel?, as if i wasn't there.

No, i don't generally sugarcoat. You guys are welcome to have at it but there's places i do care to see before i'm done and none of it is in Utah.

I could focus on blacktail and elk for a couple years...maybe. I don't know though, I really can't see myself not going on at least one muley hunt a year.

I can't wrap my mind around how many years I would forgo to hunt the Henry's, or in my case the Paunsaugunt, maybe five. It seems like I only draw a tag every five years anyways. I prefer to hunt every year and make it a family affair. I put a lot more stock on time spent with my kids than inches of antler on the wall.

No worries,
Not sure would have to think about it. I guess it depends on how many other hunts I have planned. Like this year we are headed to AK, so with a elk hunt and a Pronghorn hunt this year in WY too (hopefully) then it would be somewhat easy to skip Mule deer for the year.

To tack on multiple years, 2-3 is possible. I think 5 would be pushing it for me. Yes would be a great hunt but not sure I could give up 5 other years of hunts in very possibly multiple states chasing muleys for one rifle tag, say on the henries.

for the amount of people that talk about wanting a monster buck I would have figured either in this question or the other one, somebody regardless of age would be all over that opportunity.
I guess what this means (yes a fraction of 100th of a percent of hunters out there) is that shooting a trophy buck really isn't what drives most people.
For the most part we enjoy the hunt/opportunity/time in the woods more than the actual trophy.
(good thing)

In 2009 I made a deal with my wife that if she let me go to Alaska to hunt Dall sheep that I wouldn't hunt anything else that year. IT WAS PURE HELL! That was the stupidest idea I have ever concocted in my life. So no way I would give up even 1 season.

It is good to see so many hunters that just like to hunt. It's not just about antlers. I would give up maybe 5 years.

I think it is all about the anterlers. How many would trade a Henries but could still hunt antlerless? Most say not they wouldn't because they want to chase anterlers every year. It shows in the applications for big elk and big deer compared to applications for antlerless tags.

I like to hunt. The Henry's ain't worth giving up 1 season of hunting just to hunt it. I'm not about score. I would rather spend every waking moment of my life roaming the mountains, pursuing big game and just soaking it all in each day.

But then there is work, and family, and bills, and......Well I guess I better quit dreaming.

In Utah it is apparently a lifetime. I have never drawn a deer license there. But I hunt Wyoming and Colorado every year and hunt in Nevada, Alberta, BC and Nebraska other times. So I don't get too twisted up about Utah. If I draw, or if I live long enough to draw, it'll be a bonus.
