Got drawn for GMU 21 for deer. Probably going to focus more on the 21A section and was wondering if anyone here had hunted it before? I went up last October just for fun but went to the south end towards Hermosa. I've heard the north end around Wahoo Peak was promising. Any suggestions?

North end near Wahoo has a few big ones. They get big cause it's a extremely tough area to get into and out of. Best of luck chasing Em. Was hoping to join you but struck out this year.

Not trying to steer you away just be prepared. I've never killed a buck in there , really haven't pursued them hard in that country to be honest. Been there chasing elk is how I know about the country, found a dead head @180. So I know they exist. Good luck . If your a bivy guy it could pay off but can't realistically hike in and out daily imo .

I've ridden in there quite a bit with a friend. We see quite a few mule deer in and around the Hermosa area. You really need to get away from the trails to find quality deer or Elk though. Pack Mules are the way to go in that area, as you will wear yourself out trying to get into good hunting country. even horse back is questionable as the terrain can get pretty rough. I would look at having someone pack you in that knows the area. I have heard that the go to guy for 21A is Mike Root and I believe he is listed with the NMDGF in their outfitters section.

We have hunted that area numerous times. There are lots of deer in the wahoo mountains but there is a lot of private land patch work on any of the access roads. That area sees mostly elk hunters so deer are allowed to grow a little but the game department does throw too many tags at that area. Another area to try would be the eastern edges of iron mountain. We've seen some good bucks back in that deep timber. Really thick in there but not many hunters.
