I asked this question on the General Hunting board but probably should have been here.

For those of you who hunt mule deer with a .243 what is the maximum range you would try and what size bullets do you use?

Zacko,
I hail from a long line of 243 shooters and hunted the better part of my first 10 years with a 243 as my primary deer cartridge.... so I have a little experience to share.

First, I never lost a deer, which is more attributed to the Nosler partitions, which I used, than to my keen shooting. ha

I shot some Speer 90's and they were not tough enough at close range but worked well on longer shots. They were frangible when velocity was high and multiple hits were required, or so I presumed. Not what I want so I went back the the Partitions.

My wife has killed several bucks with an 85 gr Partition. bang/flop

I could go on and on but will stop with this; Pick a tough little bullet like the partition, place it through the ribs, avoid "raking" shots and you'll kill every deer at which you shoot out to as far as I should be shooting (about 400).

PS: I think the Accubond would work well in a 243 but have only used then in other/larger calibers as I have moved away from the 243 as my primary deer rifle.

It depends if you're talking about perfect shots or real life less than perfect shots.

If you subscribe to the 900 ft lb minimum theory for deer size game 400 yards is about the limit for a 243 with most 100 gr bullets. I'd say that's about as good of answer you're going to get.

My .243 is my go to rifle for everything short of elk, and have taken game out to 400 yards and all have been one shot kills. I mostly use the lowly Fusion 95 grain ammo since my rifles shoot it great, but have recently switched to the factory ammo from Nosler with their 95 grain Ballistic tips.

LAST EDITED ON May-17-16 AT 12:04PM (MST)[p]The past few years, my go to has been the 240 Weatherby. Has been lights out on mule deer, antelope, and several elk. A fast .243 is an amazing thing.

The 95gr Ballistic Tips and 100gr Partitions have killed deer and antelope out to 400 yards with ease.
