Henry Mtn Management Tag 2016

My dad got lucky and drew the Henry Mountain management tag for this fall. We are excited to be on a hunt and hope to find a nice buck, considering it has to be a 3 point on one side. Reaching out to see if anyone is willing to share some info on suggested areas to start looking. We have heard there are a bunch of mature bucks that meet the management buck criteria, but I am interested to see what your thoughts are and what expectations we should have going into it.

Thanks in advance!

Trevor

Find the elk buck that was photoed last year on the henries he was a monster Managment buck!

There are better management bucks down there than him and easier to find. He is unique. I'll give ya that. Good luck locating him.

I was last there in July 2014. I would recommend taking a trip down there while the bucks are still in their summer mode. "Easy" to locate them and have a good time sifting through great bucks.

Here's a video I posted to YoutTube of that trip:

The buck at 5:44 would fit the bill nicely for a management buck, as would the buck at 14:57 (Whitetail lookin)

Ditto What Browning said.
Get some summer camping trips in and learn the area, Some monster management bucks are there.

Thanks guys and thanks for the video. Always fun to see big deer. We do plan taking some trips there this summer and fall.

I was in there with a friend on the muzzy hunt last year. We saw a straight 3x3 that was every bit of 37" wide. He had a low 190"s kind of typical that we passed up and "almost" regretted. We also saw a 3x5 with a whitetail kinda frame on the 5 point side that I'd have shot for sure. We called him Barkley cause his ass was 2 feet wide! We may have killed that buck that is at 13:05 on the vidio.

Sounds like a cool management buck. Also sounds like you had a good muzzy hunt.

I had the tag last year. I received the call from DWR three days before the hunt they said I was next on the list. I took the tag knowing I couldn't go down until day 3 of the hunt.

We never saw a nice mature 3 point worth taking.

Make sure you are there opening morning as there are some there, but most of them will be taken in the first few days.

Great hunt, we had a blast and saw some great bucks, glad we were able to spend a few days in the area.

Good Luck!

Hunted that hunt with a friend in 2013. It is not an easy hunt by any means at all. It is tough sifting through all the bucks your gonna see trying to make sure they are legal. You will see many that look legal on the one side and then when they turn their head just right they have a 2in little kicker. Make sure you have the best spotting scope you can afford cuz your gonna need it to make sure that buck is legal. We ended up taking a 26in 3x4 on Thursday of the hunt. However looking at all those bucks is unbelievable. Good luck and buy an expensive spotter, now you have an excuse to buy one. Ha

Thanks Elkhunter. I sent you a PM.

Trevor,

Your dad's hunt runs later this year and that will be a deal changer. I wouldn't even go down on the mountain until Tuesday evening. If you have the week off to hunt just go video but WAIT and let everybody else get off the mountain and WAIT for those bigger older bucks to show up. I promise you they will. 99 Percent of success in killing a Giant buck or just a buck is mental. Don't get in a hurry!! IF you can keep your dad off the trigger til the last 2 days of this hunt you'll see a management buck or 2 show up that will make your jaw drop. Be patient. Most guys are not use to spending more than 2 or 3 nights on the mountain at a time so they get anxious and want to kill and end up settling for just a buck. This isn't a hunt you need to spend time scouting. I know guys that go down every year and scout for days before the opener and then by day 2 of the actual hunt can't hold out and fill their tag when the best chance at killing a buck worthy of this tag was ahead of them. I've been down on the mountain the last day of this hunt filming while the sun went down on some unreal management bucks and not a single tag holder anywhere in sight. Wait for the last couple days....kill a buck worthy of this tag...then spend the weekend taking pictures and video of some monster muleys before you head home. You'll leave the mountain content with no regrets. You only get this hunt and this time with your dad once. Make it count!

Thanks highdesertproductions! We plan on hunting hard and waiting for a good buck. Good advice on waiting for the rut to get going. We will do some scouting because the anticipation is half the fun and it will be fun to see some monster bucks. Plus we need to learn the mountain a little better.

I sent you a PM.

I'll give a +1 to what has been said so far.
I have been down there helping out on a couple of management hunts. We always go down towards the end of summer to take a look at the bucks before they scatter. It is a good idea to become familiar with the roads and some of the glassing points. Some of the biggest three points you find will be killed by other tag holders before your hunt, they are every year.

When you get back down there in November you will find that the mature three points are hard to find. Depending on how close the rut is, you will need to be patient. The bigger bucks will be holding up somewhere just waiting for the rut action to start. You will see large groups of does with some smaller bucks. Most tag out by Tuesday as stated. So if you truly find a buck you want to go after before the opener you better be prepared because it will be a circus. Fish and game have reported smaller/younger bucks being taken with each passing year. Saw a couple shot last year that were less than 20 inches wide. Sad.

Take brownings advice to heart. Hold off til the last day if possible. you will be the only ones left on the mountain and have all those deer to yourself. Also keep in mind that the weather can be brutal. We delt with 30-40 mph steady winds that would gust into the sixtys two years ago. I can handle cold and snow but it is hard to steady a spotter in those winds and when you are looking for points that are just over one inch it is hard.

Important thing is tell your dad not to get too caught up with the size of the deer. Enjoy each other, enjoy the mountain and all of the monster bucks you will be seeing. The henrys is a magical place.
......and make sure you have good tires and a good spare.
PM me and I can share details of some areas you might want to focus on.

Id love to see pcs of that buck Fishnut. He was my favorite buck of the trip.

I had a management tag for the Henrys is 2013. You have already been given great advice. Scout early, use the best optics you can afford or borrow. Hunt late, less people and bucks become more active. I cannot emphasize how careful you have to be about not shooting a buck with cheaters. It seems to be genetic, most of the three points have cheaters. Take a friend to keep you off the trigger until the right buck is found and to make sure it is legal.
Take a camera and enjoy a hunt of a lifetime.

PM sent carbonnation. thanks for the info highcountryhays. I would love to see a pic of your mgmt buck.

depends on the amount of points you have. Can go to Utah DOW website and check odds up to 2015 or can go to toprut.com and check them for free too.
If you have zero or near that for points guessing your odds are about 1-5% of drawing the tag.

Another tip is find out some of the other tag holder names from earlier hunts(this year) and see if they will let ya see some of their video and where they have seen a good management buck or 2 and talking to them will give ya updated look at what is being seen Now. That is worth more then a video from a year or 2 ago. As soon as they start rubbing they start breaking up into smaller and smaller herds so what was seen a one canyon might now be a in another canyon 3 miles away. Those camping trips will pay off in the long run.
